When launched, OnePlus talked a lot about Trinity Engine, an intelligent software setup that was expected to keep the RAM and storage on your OnePlus 12 or 12R running smooth as butter for several years after you purchase the device. In this marketing, they mentioned that some OnePlus 12R variants would ship with fast UFS 4.0 storage.

However, according to a OnePlus Community post, things have been clarified, and not a single variant of the OnePlus 12R is going to come with UFS 4.0 storage. Instead, you’ll have to make do with UFS 3.1 storage, which is the same as in the OnePlus 11R. For reference, besides the 128 GB model of the Samsung Galaxy S24, all other variants in the entire series have UFS 4.0.

As expected, UFS 4.0 is theoretically twice as fast as UFS 3.1 is, and is also meant to consume less power. This means that you should see better battery endurance while getting a faster storage chip. However, whether you’ll greatly appreciate this in real-world usage depends on what you use your phone for.

How Will OnePlus Make This Error Up To Customers?

A lot of customers have purchased their OnePlus 12R with the impression that they were getting UFS 4.0. For many people, it is a valid criterion when shopping for a phone — UFS 3.0 vs UFS 2.1 was the reason I chose a Galaxy Note 10+ instead of a Huawei P30 Pro!

Returning the phone is an option if UFS 3.1 storage is a dealbreaker for you, but for others, it is an inconvenience but still counts as a misrepresentation of what was coming with the smartphone. So, how might OnePlus make up for this error?

According to the OnePlus Community post that gave us this information, affected customers have been advised to contact support on February 15th when a plan would have been decided. Most likely this may be some form of cashback or discount code.

What Exactly Is Trinity Engine?

Trinity Engine is a proprietary software engine developed by OnePlus to work with the processor, RAM, and storage chip inside the OnePlus 12 devices. The major advantage of this is that it keeps your smartphone’s software working at the top of its game for years after getting the phone.

For instance, these software algorithms will make your CPU work faster when it needs to and reduce the battery drain overall. It will also intelligently detect when to free up RAM and when to prioritize open applications. Finally, it will also have software to prevent your storage from getting overly cluttered with efficient compression and defragmentation.
