The OnePlus 13R has arrived, and it’s certainly making waves! It starts at ₹42,999, and offers Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and a dedicated telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom.
So, is this the best phone under ₹50,000?
Design and Build
The 13R showcases a modern design language, featuring a completely flat frame and display—a departure from the 12R’s curved aesthetic. This design choice will likely polarize opinions; some will appreciate the clean lines, while others might miss the more ergonomic feel of curves.
The circular camera island remains, but it’s now detached from the frame, a design element that adds a unique touch, though its off-center placement might not appeal to everyone. Consider your personal preference for camera placement when evaluating this design.
The matte black finish exudes a sophisticated look and effectively repels fingerprints, a practical advantage in daily use. The phone feels premium in hand. The iconic alert slider, a hallmark of OnePlus devices, is a welcome inclusion, offering a convenient way to manage sound profiles.
Durability is addressed with Gorilla Glass 7i protecting the display, offering reasonable scratch resistance. The IP65 rating provides protection against dust and water splashes, adding a degree of reassurance in everyday situations.
Display
The OnePlus 13R boasts a high-quality AMOLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, making scrolling and animations appear fluid.
The 1.5K resolution provides a crisp and detailed viewing experience, a good balance between sharpness and power consumption.
The use of an LTPO panel contributes to better battery efficiency. Its HBM brightness of 1600 nits ensures excellent visibility even in bright sunlight.
Performance
The OnePlus 13R is a performance-oriented device. It’s powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, a powerful processor that handles demanding tasks with ease. Gaming performance is exceptional; demanding titles run smoothly with minimal frame drops.
Up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM ensures seamless multitasking, allowing you to switch between applications without experiencing lag. Storage options reach up to 512GB, utilizing fast UFS 4.0 technology for quick app loading and file transfers.
Software
The 13R runs OxygenOS 15, based on Android 15. The close relationship between OnePlus and Oppo is evident, as OxygenOS shares many similarities with ColorOS.
While the software generally offers a clean and user-friendly experience, the presence of bloatware, a secondary app store, and some intrusive system notifications is a point of concern.
While the overall user experience is smooth and responsive, the software isn’t as clean as it once was.
Cameras
The OnePlus 13R features a triple rear camera system: a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 50MP telephoto lens.
While the hardware is capable, the image processing could be refined. Photos tend to exhibit over-saturation, with colours appearing overly vibrant and sometimes unnatural.
Oversharpening is also apparent, giving images an artificial look. The telephoto lens lacks optical image stabilization (OIS), resulting in blurry images, particularly in low-light conditions.
Video recording capabilities extend to 4K at 60fps, but the same colour saturation issues are present. Although the footage does come out to be impressively stable.
The 16MP front-facing camera also suffers from over-processing, with over-sharpened selfies and unnatural skin tones. Front-facing video recording is also limited to 1080p at 30fps.
Battery Life
The OnePlus 13R packs a substantial 6000mAh battery, providing excellent battery life that easily lasts a full day.
While the 80W fast charging is reasonably quick, it’s worth noting that it’s slower than some competitors and a step down from the 12R.
Verdict
The OnePlus 13R offers amazing performance, a vibrant display, and impressive battery life.
Its cameras, though good, need more fine-tuning. Also, while its software is quite fluid, it is not as clean as before.
Still, the price-to-performance ratio of the OnePlus 13R is unmatched. If performance and battery life are your priorities, the 13R is a strong contender.
