In case you might not know, OnePlus is now a subbrand of Oppo (even though they didn’t start out that way). One of the founders of OnePlus was ex-Oppo, so it explains why the companies are tightly linked. It’s also why both companies tend to follow major software changes at the same time, and that’s what’s about to happen.

OnePlus and Oppo have announced their intentions to bring the highest-end Google Gemini model, Gemini Ultra, to their smartphones later this year. The news doesn’t come with any specific devices mentioned, but we know that the latest flagships from both companies, like the OnePlus 12 and 12R, as well as the Oppo Find X7 Ultra, should be in line for this, as the companies are unlikely to release more powerful phones until 2025.

This is pretty interesting, as even phones in the Pixel 8 series and the Galaxy S24 series are opting for a combination of Gemini Nano and Gemini Pro. This could mean that Oppo and OnePlus could be the first brands in line to use Gemini Ultra. This is coming soon after the companies launched their AI Eraser feature (which is like the features that Google, Samsung, and recently Tecno have), so they’re clearly taking AI seriously.

What AI Features Will OnePlus And Oppo Gain?

At Google’s Cloud Next ’24 event, they talked about a lot of the Gemini-fueled Cloud AI features that would be coming to devices from these two companies, and these include news summarization, voice recording summarization, a vaguely named AI Toolbox, and so on.

That’s great and all, but those features don’t even come under the umbrella of Gemini Ultra, and it is expected that when that does land, it should bring even juicier features to the table. For instance, Oppo and OnePlus made reference to features that could be used to generate social media content using AI.

What Are The Differences Between The Different Levels Of Google Gemini?

Google has three variations of its Gemini AI model, including Nano, Pro, and Ultra.

Gemini Nano is different from the other two because it’s an on-device implementation of Gemini that’s lightweight enough not to need an internet connection. Of course, this means that it is relatively weaker than the cloud-based version.

Gemini Pro can do a lot, and if you’ve ever used Gemini on your browser, that’s what it runs on. It’s in the middle of the field and it is able to do what the average AI chatbot is expected to be able to do.

However, Gemini Ultra, which runs the Gemini Advanced chatbot, is the most powerful variant of the AI model and that amount of power makes cloud servers absolutely necessary. It should be able to understand photos, videos, and text, and comprehend data in a very advanced fashion.
