OnePlus has today confirmed that its upcoming Nord 2 5G handset will be its first phone to be powered by a variant of MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 chipset. The custom Dimensity 1200-AI is the result of OnePlus and MediaTek teaming up to bring a host of new AI-based features to the chipset, and thus the Nord 2 5G.

“The Dimensity 1200-AI is the first example of MediaTek’s Dimensity Open Resource Architecture initiative, optimizing the powerful Dimensity 1200 5G chipset to deliver a customized experience for OnePlus users,” said Dr. JC Hsu, Corporate VP and GM of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit. “As AI is reshaping the future of chipset technology, this initiative gives brands like OnePlus access to the latest AI-powered capabilities with the flexibility to innovate in new and exciting ways.”

This isn’t entirely a surprise as previous leaks have pointed to the Nord 2 being powered by the Dimensity 1200 processor, but the collaboration between OnePlus and MediaTek with regards to its boosted AI capabilities is new.

“At OnePlus, we are committed to sharing the best technology with the world, and the OnePlus Nord line reaffirms this mission in a more accessible price category,” said Pete Lau, Founder of OnePlus. “The fast and smooth smartphone experience is an integral part of what makes OnePlus unique, and we are always seeking new ways and technologies that allow us to bring that experience to more users.”

The Dimensity 1200-AI will be exclusive to OnePlus, bringing the following AI enhancements to the Nord 2 5G:

    • AI-assisted photography for superior imaging
    • Display enhancements for a top-ranking user experience
    • Better response times for faster and smoother gaming

OnePlus is launching the Nord 2 5G before the end of July, so tell us what you would like it to bring to the table?
