ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WBKO) – Several Elizabethtown banks are reporting a surge in scams. The police said these scams are costing the community tens of thousands of dollars.
The department says there’s a real case of a man who got a pop-up on his computer, called a fake “Microsoft Support” number. The fake customer service was named “Roy” and “Shawn.”
According to Elizabethtown Police, the scammers gained access to his banking info, stole it, and connected the victim to a third person who claimed to be from the bank’s fraud department. The scammers convinced him to withdraw $20,000, lie to a bank staffer, and deposit the money into a Bitcoin ATM.
Here are some tips to stay safe from these fraudsters:
- Don’t call pop-up numbers! Get an IT pro to check your computer in person.
- Scammers can spoof the Caller ID. Unfortunately, neither banks nor businesses can stop it.
- Banks/law enforcement will not call you to deposit money into crypto ATMs.
- Microsoft won’t connect to your computer. Scammers can control your screen to fake legitimacy.
- If you are doubtful, hang up, call the business at a verified number, or contact the police.
