With an average resolution of just 720p in the all-important 60fps performance mode, the brand-new Star Wars game does not seem to be well optimized for current-gen consoles like Sony’s PS5 and the Xbox Series X. A detailed tech analysis on YouTube now sheds light on the technical shortcoming of EA’s Jedi Survivor.

Respawn Entertainment’s latest triple-a title, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, has had a rocky start to say the least. Some reviews have criticized the Unreal Engine 4-based action game for its numerous technical flaws, many of which are also found in the console version for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Therefore, prospective buyers of this game might want to check out Digital Foundry’s comprehensive tech analysis on YouTube in order to avoid the dreaded buyer’s remorse.

The in-depth tech review video takes a closer look at the two different graphics modes of Star Wars Jedi Survivor on consoles, and enthusiasts will be surprised to see that the game’s performance mode features a fairly low resolution on PS5. Specifically, the game is rendered at resolutions raging between 648p and 864p, but AMD’s FSR 2 technology is employed to upscale the image to a more appropriate 1440p. However, frame rates in this graphics mode are also disappointing as Jedi Survivor is unable to hold a stable 60 fps and can drop down to 45 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

According to Digital Foundry, the resolution mode of Star Wars Jedi Survivor fares a bit better and is able to provide a more consistent 30 fps experience on PS5. Image quality is also noticeably sharper in this graphics mode as the game is rendered at up to 1440p and subsequently upscaled to 4k. However, gamers without a VRR-compatible TV might still get distracted by some frame drops and the corresponding tearing during busy scenes. Overall, Star Wars fans should cross their fingers that the California-based developer will eventually improve the rather underwhelming technical implementation of its latest game on consoles as well as the PC.
