Having recently launched an app that only shows Safe-For-Work (SFW) content, the contention site OnlyFans has announced that it will not allow content of a sexually-explicit nature to be posted on its servers from October onwards. The company is attempting to pivot towards becoming comes as a result of pressure from banking institutions and concern over accounts that posted illegal content, but it’s a move that won’t be popular with the creators and ‘fans’ that helped OnlyFans achieve $2 billion in sales last year.
Updated August 25: Well, that didn’t take long. OnlyFans has posted a tweet stating that it has suspended plans to get rid of explicit content on the site from October 1st thanks to it having ‘secured assurances necessary’, which probably means that it realized that the explicit content is what pays the bills and keeps the bank balance looking healthy. Whatever issues it has/had with its money people has either been solved or put on the back burner for the time being.
Before you get too giddy with excitement, the statement only says that the plan has been ‘suspended’, which means that some version of may yet be announced at a later time. OnlyFans may decide to take a longer-term approach to the plan and slowly-slowly edge the explicit content creators off the platform rather than an outright suspension.
Chances are, if you’ve heard of OnlyFans then you probably know that it’s a site that allows explicit sexual content to be uploaded by sex workers and creators for their fans to purchase and download alongside. The pandemic saw its user base grow to 130 million users with content ranging from cooking to fitness videos, although it’s perhaps best known for its pornographic content.
“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” OnlyFans said.”
According to a press release given to Bloomberg, OnlyFans will still allow nude content so long as it complies with its guidelines which have yet to be revealed.
