We’ve all seen those smartphone adverts claiming that a particular model has 50MP cameras, obfuscating that there is only one such camera, with the rest of the setup most likely consisting of 8MP and 2MP sensors. In the case of the newly launched Oppo Find X7 Ultra, it’s entirely true because there are four 50MP cameras housed in the distinctive rear housing, with two being periscope telephoto lenses. That’s right, the Find X7 Ultra is the first smartphone to sport a pair of periscope telephoto lenses that offer 3x and 6x optical zoom.
Cameras
The rear camera setup consists of a 50MP LYT-900 primary sensor, a 50MP LYT-600 ultra-wide lens, the 50MP IMX-890 3x periscope camera, and a 50MP IMX858 periscope lens. Both periscope cameras feature OIS, and all the sensors benefit from Hasselblad tuning along with Oppo’s Hypertone Imaging Engine, which helps with over-exposed images and more.
Suppose you like to tweak the settings to produce unique imagery. In that case, you’ll be happy to learn that you can save your saturation, contrast, sharpness, and vignette preferences to a profile for easy access. A feature set to be added through a software update in the coming months is the ability to save images in a ‘RAW Max’ format that lets you snap 50MP RAW images with dynamic range and 16-bit color options.
Hardware
Under the hood, you’ll find everything needed to make the Find X7 Ultra a true 2024 flagship smartphone. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor? Check. 16GB of RAM? Check. 100W fast charging? Check. An insanely bright display? Check.
Filling in the gaps are 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, a 5,000mAh battery, and 50W wireless charging. The 6.82-inch AMOLED display with 1440p resolution, up to 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits will gain Ultra HDR support in a future update. Oppo says the Find X7 Ultra’s display also features the Rain Water Touch screen tech found on the OnePlus 12 panel.
Did we mention that, for the first time, the Find X7 Ultra features an alert slider? There’s also an IR blaster present.
Design
Rather than reinventing the wheel, Oppo has chosen to refine the aesthetic of the Find X6 Pro with some noticeable changes: the vegan leather finish, which is present on all models, now meets the metallic finish just below the halfway line of the camera housing. It’s one of the more striking smartphone designs around, and in my opinion, you can’t go wrong with a vegan leather finish.
The Find X7 Ultra is available in Vast Sea and Sky (Navy Blue), Desert Silver Moon (Tan), and ‘Song Ying Mo Yun,’ black vegan leather with a black metal finish.
The Bad News
Like last year’s Find X6 Pro, the Find X7 Ultra is unlikely to be released outside China. This is at least partly due to Oppo’s ongoing legal dispute with Nokia, which has seen the brand (and other BKK smartphone brands such as Realme and OnePlus) retreat from European markets.
The Good News
The OnePlus 12 looks similar to the Find X7 Ultra but without the vegan leather finish. Even the LED flash module is in the same position, and we already know that it’s powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and will support wireless charging.
Launching on January 23rd, the OnePlus 12 and 12R could be the flagship competition that will take the fight to the soon-to-launch Galaxy S24 series, which Samsung will unveil on January 17th. With CES 2024 also kicking off today, January is shaping up to be a monstrous month for tech launches.
