Plex Is Fixing Its Unpopular New Mobile Apps

Plex’s new mobile apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android have more than a few problems. Thankfully, the company is working on fixing many of the reported issues, and one update has already been released to fix some bugs.

Plex started rolling out its rewritten and redesigned apps for Android, iPhone, and iPad at the end of March, with a new unified codebase that will eventually roll out to TV platforms as well. The update was in public beta testing for several months, and even though many bugs and missing features were fixed during that period, the version that started rolling out to regular Plex users was still not finished.

There were countless complaints about app performance, missing functionality, accessibility issues, freezes, and other problems. Some functionality was also intentionally removed, such as dropping support for custom server URLs and all music playback moving to the Plexamp app.

The company said in a forum post, “We’ve been building this new mobile experience for quite some time, with help from many of you during our Preview phase. Your feedback has helped shape every release, fix, and polish we’ve pushed out—and now that it’s in the hands of even more users, we are continuing to learn more. Plex supports an incredibly wide range of devices, media formats, and server setups. That’s both what makes it awesome… and a huge challenge to deliver a consistently amazing experience across our user base. […] Please know, we are working through the newly reported issues as fast as possible and the team is resolving them as they are reproduced.”

Plex also said the Preview app wasn’t updated with the “final production code,” so some of the bug reports were for issues that were already fixed. The Preview app has been updated to match the current mainline Plex app, and it will eventually be retired in favor of the regular Plex beta apps.

More Updates on the Way

The new app is still only rolled out to “a (very) small percentage of users,” and it’s not clear if Plex has paused the rollout while it works on more updates. For what it’s worth, the new app has been pushed to a few people here at How-To Geek, mostly on Apple devices.

Plex says it’s working through all the bug reports and fixing issues, and some problems have already been fixed in Plex for Android 2025.11.1 and Plex for iOS 2025.11.1. The changelog for those updates is below.

  • Added h264/hevc 10 bit playback support.
  • Show a toast when recording and when cancelling a recording in the OSD.
  • Persist watchlist filters.
  • Added subtitle to media item actions.

More updates are on the way, though Plex didn’t mention which areas specifically will be addressed in the next wave of fixes. If you’re on the new app, keep an eye out for updates in the App Store or Google Play Store.
