Prime Video Could Soon Gain Multiview Support For Sports

Amazon’s Prime Video streaming platform is great for those who want to watch some of the latest TV series and movies, but it can also be a great place to access games from your favorite sports leagues, such as the NBA, WNBA, NFL, NASCAR, the Premier League, and the UEFA Champions League.

If you’re an avid sports watcher, you’ll know there are some occasions when there are multiple compelling sports matchups at the same time, but you have to choose one or the other. Multiview solves that problem but not all streaming services support it. That might change soon for Prime Video.

An APK Teardown Shows That Prime Video Might Get Multiview Support Sometime Soon

I’m a massive football fan and it’s probably the sole sport that I follow with passion. Regardless of the league you’re following though, it is extremely common for multiple games to be on at the same time and you either need multiple devices, have to be fine jumping back and forth between the different games, or have to choose whichever is the most important game to you.

Some streaming app developers understand how much of a genuine problem this is, and that’s why multiview is a thing. This feature essentially lets you watch multiple sports at the same time by dividing your screen into different panels.

Thanks to an Android Authority APK teardown of the latest version of the Prime Video app, it looks like Amazon intends to add multiview support to its mobile app, and likely apps on other platforms as well. The new strings in the APK mention not being able to control playback when multiview is enabled, so that means it’ll truly be “live”—no rewinding or pausing.

Details On This Upcoming Feature Are Still Very Limited

Since word of multiview isn’t coming from an official source, details on the feature are very limited. For one, we have no idea when it is actually going to make its way to devices, which is a little annoying in case you want to use the feature for those Christmas games.

At the same time, we also don’t know how many simultaneous streams it is going to support, though I’d assume that it’d be four, similar to what other platforms offer.

Prime Video Might Be Gearing Up To Knock YouTube TV Out Of The Running

One platform that already offers multiview is YouTube TV, which lets you use it to watch up to four sporting games at the exact same time, and the best part is that it handles the splicing from the server end, so as far as your device is concerned, it is only handling a single video stream—perfect for devices that don’t have as much power available to them.

With an 11-year deal to be the exclusive streaming partner of the NBA and WNBA, Prime Video will be bringing in a lot of new viewers by default. Bringing in a multiview feature will also be leveling the playing field by quite a bit. It’d make for an even more compelling choice if it handles the multiview processing from the server end like YouTube TV does.

Regardless, we’re going to keep our ears to the ground regarding this feature so that you can know as soon as it is ready for consumers.
