Proton Technologies has upgraded its Proton Drive service by adding a new feature called Albums. This feature makes organizing, sharing, and keeping their important photos and videos safe by giving you folders called ‘Albums’ to use.
This is a basic feature for any cloud storage service with media uploads, but Proton Drive has been prioritizing more typical file storage features. It took a while, but now you can organize your photos and videos into shareable albums that are independent of your actual file structure. You still get the same end-to-end encryption as other Proton Drive features, helping it stand apart from competitors like Google Drive, Google Photos, and OneDrive.
This new update comes with “secure sharing,” which means sending email invites to others with a Proton Drive account. Currently, you cannot share this with anyone who does not have an account, but it is coming in the future. If you send the invite, the recipient can view or add photos and videos to those albums.
The album creator controls who has access, and permissions can be removed at any time. It also comes with real-time syncing, like OneDrive or Google Drive, so everyone with access can see the latest changes.
Everything in an album, like photos, videos, album names, and even details like location data and camera settings, is encrypted so that only the people with permission can see it. The main difference is that many other cloud photo storage services scan user images for ads, AI training, or other purposes that could put personal memories at risk. Proton Drive avoids these practices, keeping user data safe from unwanted access or misuse. Basically, your photos remain your photos.

Proton’s focus on privacy is the biggest selling point for any of their features, like Albums. Unlike other companies that make money by using customer data, Proton is against that practice. No one else, not even Proton, can access what is stored in Albums.
Albums is now available to all Proton Drive subscribers on both computers and mobile devices. New subscribers can get this feature by signing up for Proton Drive Plus, which includes 200 GB of encrypted storage. That is enough space for over 40,000 high-quality photos, and should give you plenty of room to store your entire photo and video collection.
According to Proton, future updates will include the ability to share albums with links, which will make it possible to send albums to people without Proton accounts. Another planned feature is a quick filter for screenshots, which will help users find specific images like receipts or memes faster.
While folders and Albums may seem simple, keeping them safe takes time and a lot of work. Proton likely took time to add these in so the company could be sure that everything in these Albums was secure.
