The average flagship smartphone these days comes with specs that make them irresistible for gaming, even if you don’t use them for gaming purposes. For instance, a device like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with a 1440p display, 120Hz refresh, 12GB of RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, and perhaps the most powerful mobile GPU in the Adreno 750. That’s a gamer’s paradise.

The thing is, to fully take advantage of specs like that, especially when it comes to the refresh rate, it is very important for the game developer to explicitly support higher refresh rates. PlayerUnknown: Battlegrounds, AKA PUBG, is one of the most popular games on the Android platform, especially since it taps into the extremely popular battle royale game mode. Despite having been on mobile platforms for several years now, it only maxes out at 90 fps, no matter how fancy your phone is.

Well, here’s the good thing. If you own any device in the Samsung Galaxy S23 or S24 lineups, or the Galaxy Z Fold 5, you’ll soon be able to play PUBG at the maximum refresh rate supported by your device: 120 fps. Today, PUBG is getting a new update that will add a new 120 fps mode, and a mod on Samsung’s forum has confirmed that the devices mentioned earlier will be getting “priority approval” for the new frame rate setting.

Beyond that, Samsung has also said that it has worked with Tencent, the PUBG dev, to optimize the game’s performance further, so, even with priority for the 120 fps mode, you’ll likely be getting better PUBG performance on these Galaxy devices than on any other device.

What’s The Advantage of 120 FPS Support In A Game Like PUBG?

If you’re the kind of person who can easily notice the difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz when scrolling through the menus of your smartphone, then you’ll definitely be able to realize how that might benefit gaming. The answer is that it’ll basically give you a smoother image when playing.

Sure, that looks great, but for a game like PUBG that is played competitively and is also very fast-paced, it has an actual advantage on the gameplay side of things. You’re trying to snipe down fast-moving enemies in the arena and you potentially get to see a change in their position 60 times every second on a “regular” screen.

That’s more than enough for most people, but for people who play in tournaments or consider PUBG serious business, doubling that to 120 fps provides an actual advantage when you’re good enough. Either way, even if you can’t take advantage of the competitive boost, the game will simply look smoother.
