Red Apple Fire containment line grows to 90 percent

WENATCHEE — Firefighters tackling the week-old Red Apple Fire north of Wenatchee said they’ve achieved 90 percent containment as of Tuesday.

Bill Steers, operations section chief for the California-based Type 1 management team that’s handled the fire since Friday, said observers will still see slash piles burning in the fire interior, but those burns are well controlled and the perimeter of the fire is under patrol.

The cause of the 12,228-acre fire, which broke out July 13 near Monitor, remains under investigation, although Chelan County Sheriff’s Office says it is believed to be human-caused. No homes were lost in the blaze, although more than 1,000 residences were placed under evacuation notices of varying severity.
