Gartner’s Q1 2022 PC shipment report is out and it gives an overview of how the major PC industry players are doing both within the U.S. and abroad as well as how current political events are affecting the marketplace.
The upcoming figures are expressed in terms of thousands of units, so keep that in mind for scale. On the U.S. front, Dell has claimed the crown for Q1 2022 with 5,144 (5,144,000 units shipped), representing 5.4% year-over-year (YoY) growth. HP came in second with 4,317 in the U.S., resulting in a nearly 40% dip in YoY growth. And in third place was Lenovo, with a roughly 25% YoY shrink thanks to its Q1 2022 shipment total of 3,263. Apple came in fourth place, now controlling 14.5% of the U.S. market. Dell and Apple were the only two major vendors to see positive YoY numbers.
Globally, the story’s a bit different, and Gartner’s reported numbers more or less line up with IDC’s. Lenovo took the gold worldwide, HP managed silver, and Dell came in third in terms of shipments and overall global market share for Q1 2022.
When it came to how the EMEA region has been impacted by current world conflicts, this is what Gartner Research Director Mikako Kitagawa had to say. “Many PC vendors stopped shipping devices into Russia and demand in Ukraine collapsed. Additionally, the growing impact of upward inflationary pressure on discretionary spending has no doubt caused consumers to hold back on buying PCs, especially in Eastern Europe, which accounts for around 18% of the EMEA PC market.”
According to the report, the whole of the EMEA PC market has seen a 6.3% decline compared to last year, capping out at 22.5 million units shipped. It’s worth noting that Russia’s war risks affecting far more than PC shipments. If you are interested in learning more about the conflict’s impact, Ukrainian game studios have provided comments on the matter.
