The Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker is the perfect distraction for your youngsters. Moreover, it looks absolutely incredible! The 2022 version allows you to select a dragon or an owl. Accordingly, there is a feminine and masculine design to appease any child. I’m reviewing the dragon option and my kids adore it! Furthermore, I think it’s pretty special when it keeps them from being under my feet for 5 minutes or longer.
This compact speaker is blessed with all the goodness of the Amazon Kids+ subscription. Thankfully, a 1 year free sub is included in the package. Alongside this, it can be used alongside other Amazon devices to scream at your children from another room. The Drop-in feature has caused much hilarity as silly and naughty messages are conveyed between floors.
If this isn’t enough for you, there are Alexa commands, parental controls, and plenty of games and apps to enjoy. Consequently, this little speaker packs an almighty punch.

Technical aspects.
This powerful little speaker is effectively a dolled-up version of the adult Echo Dot. Subsequently, the speaker is exceptional and probably too good for its intended audience. However, this matters not as you can enjoy the music that is selected or be amazed as Alexa helps with every homework problem. Alongside this, your children can control smart appliances from the device. Now, if this isn’t something that appeals to you, you can deactivate it from the parental app. After all, who wants their TV or living room hijacked by a ten-year-old?
One of the shortcomings of this device is its lack of battery power. Unfortunately, you must have it plugged in at all times. Accordingly, if you are a bit OCD about power usage, this may make you sweat. Additionally, plugs aren’t always freely available, and this can cause some minor issues. Yet, this shouldn’t be a deal breaker as it has a low power draw and the compact speaker can be housed on any solid surface.
Security.
Being a parent is somewhat worrying. The Internet is a dark place and your privacy has never been so important. Luckily, the Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker prioritises these concerns. Amazon has provided multi-layered privacy protection to keep you and your family safe. On top of this, you can mute the microphone to prevent private conversations from being overheard. This was great as it gives you a reassuring feeling.
Usability.
Just like the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro tablet, this device is unbelievably easy to use. This was great as my kids couldn’t wait to get started. The box hadn’t even been opened and they were clambering over one another to get the music pumping. Thankfully, this wasn’t an issue as I managed to get the speaker set up in record time. Furthermore, connecting it to the parental app and my Wi-Fi was unbelievably simple.
Once you get things going, you can activate your 1-year subscription service. After this, I suggest looking at advanced apps to improve your user experience. There are plenty to pick from, but we enjoyed Number Blocks, Disney, and Audible to name but a few.
If you are familiar with Alexa, you won’t be taken by surprise. However, I was impressed by the excellent microphone pick-up and how it understood every question my kids threw at it. I’d like to say they used this device for purely educational reasons, but some rather questionable songs were played on repeat. Unfortunately, the immature music was just the tip of the silly iceberg. As such, if you invest, you can expect to hear plenty of jokes, farts, and horrific music.
Build quality.
I love the tactile buttons and the streamlined approach. Moreover, the charging port is hidden at the rear for perfect cable management. This is ideal as it reduces tripping hazards and prevents any unnecessary damage. On top of this, the bottom has a pleasant blue light that activates during commands. This was fantastic as it brought the speaker to life.
I wouldn’t say that this device is bulletproof, but it is pretty hard-wearing. I admit that I dropped it a couple of times and it was left unscathed. However, it landed on carpeted flooring, so this didn’t test it too much. Consequently, I wouldn’t go chucking it about and I had to remind my kids that it wasn’t a toy.
Is the Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker worth it?
Amazon has grabbed this niche market and made it their own. The Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker doesn’t cut corners and is easy to use. Furthermore, it looks great and it respects your privacy. On top of this, the 1 year subscription is packed with content and the ability to control every aspect is reassuring. Accordingly, this is a superb product and I recommend buying it here!
