The BenQ GV30 was officially announced last year, and it became Taiwan and Japan’s best-selling portable LED projector. It also bagged quite a number of awards. So, after months of arrangements, the BenQ GV30 is finally making its way into Malaysia. After using the projector for the past few weeks, here’s what I have to share.
Video Review
Unboxing & Setup
When I received the package, I was surprised by the size of the box, especially for a portable projector. Once we got into the contents, it became clear why. BenQ is including a hard-shell travel case for the GV30.
It is not just for the projector but also for the remote control and the charger. There is still available space if you want to throw in an HDMI or USB cable. Great job to the product manager because this is actually useful.
The first thing you need to do when you got the GV30 is to install the Android TV stick into its dedicated slot.
Just pop off the side panel and you’ll see an HDMI port and micro USB cable ready for the Android TV stick.
Outlook
For a portable projector, the GV30 is just about the size of my hand and weighs 1.6kg. It has a rather unique design and it is not just for good looking.
Combined with the magnetic base, you can now have a 135-degree projection, whether if you want to project on the wall, ceiling or even on the floor. I think this is a 200 IQ brilliant idea for a projector.
With the easy projection angle adjustment feature, the GV30 also included auto vertical keystone and autofocus. There are two sensors at the side of the projection lens to detect the projection surface and automatically adjust the keystone and focus.
You can also use the remote to trigger the keystone and auto-focus.
Connectivities & controls
The GV30 has all the ports located at the side. We have:
- Full-size HDMI port
- USB-C (with Power Delivery support)
- 3.5mm audio jack
- barrel charging port
The controls are mainly done through the Android TV remote control while the physical buttons on the projector are for simple actions such as turning on/off, changing the volume and enabling the Bluetooth.
Battery Life
The built-in 4800mAh battery is enough to provide 2.5 hours of video playback. Given if you’re using the Low Power Mode which decreases the maximum brightness by 50%. Apart from the provided charger, you can also charge the GV30 using a USB-PD power bank with 45W (15V 3A) power output. That should extend the use time especially if you’re planning to watch those 3 hours-long movies.
Projection & Audio Quality
The GV30 is a 720p HD projector. Sure, it may not be as crisp and sharp as a 1080p full HD resolution, however, what BenQ has to offer in return are a highly accurate colour reproduction and distinct contrast. Projecting up to 80-inch from 2.1m distant, colourful animations and action-packed blockbusters will look amazing from the GV30. YouTuber and Reviewer – The Hook Up channel compared the GV30 side by side with multiple portable projectors and came to conclude that BenQ has the best overall image quality.
Audio plays a huge role in the movie-watching experience. The built-in 16W 2.1 channel speaker sounds amazing. The reason is mostly due to the design of the GV30 whereby the speakers have more room to broadcast the sound. No matter how you position the projector, it will not block the speakers. That is a huge benefit as you also use the GV30 as a standalone Bluetooth speaker.
Android TV
As mentioned earlier, the BenQ GV30 is powered by the Android TV operating system. If you’re used to any Android TVs, then you will feel right at home with this user interface. It is Google certified and comes with an official app store. You can get most of your favourite TV apps in the store, such as Plex.
The system also supports wireless projection, especially how it works seamlessly with Apple AirPlay.
While there is no direct Netflix app available, you can access to Netflix through Aptoide TV.
Conclusion: BenQ GV30 – Excellent All-in-One Portable Projector
At the official price tag of RM2,688, some people might think it is expensive. Do keep in mind that, while you can get cheaper portable projectors on the market, however, most of them are 480p resolution and lacks the projection quality and of course the sound quality. What you’re paying for is a balanced, all-in-one experience whereby the product itself is thoughtfully designed. For Malaysians, there will be a pre-order from 20th June until 4th July and you can get your hands on the GV30 at just RM 2,499.
