Review – Samsung Galaxy A13 4G

This is one of Samsung’s entry-level smartphones right now. As depicted from the name of this phone, the A13 means that it is still within the Galaxy A series but is number “1” in terms of tier – remember we also have the Galaxy A73 which means it is the 7th tier, and the number “3” means that it is the third generation.

Design

I personally like the design of the Galaxy A13 more than any other phone that I’ve touched this year. You see, the back panel wraps around the side of the phone too – which invokes a sense of playfulness and to me, it feels like a piece of candy.

The glossy plastic material is something that I don’t prefer. I’d like matte plastic but hey, the color is beautiful.

Cameras

The camera bumps are simple – cutouts for the cameras and we’re done. There are 4 cameras here but to me, I’ll consider only two of them to be usable as the depth and macro cameras shouldn’t exist.

Screen

The screen is also very straightforward. It has a 6.6-inch PLS LCD screen with a resolution 2408×1080 pixels and at 60Hz refresh rate. Honestly speaking, the screen looks fine to me but the automatic brightness is an issue to me. It tends to adjust the brightness either too slowly or too dimly.

It’s a minor issue since a software update can fix this issue. Currently, it’s just a bit annoying. If you don’t use automatic brightness, then this won’t be an issue for you.

Performance

And this phone is also equipped with an Exynos 850 chipset. I never knew this chipset exists and it performs well enough for day-to-day tasks. Don’t expect this phone to be playing any higher-end games because this is still an entry-level phone.

I mean, Genshin Impact isn’t available for download on the Samsung Galaxy A13.

Battery life

The battery life is fairly decent on this phone. Its 5,000mAh battery can last for about 16 hours in our PCMark battery life test and I’ll have to say – this phone can last for two days with one single charge.

Charging speed

Since we were only sent the phone itself, we have to rely on our Ugreen charger to do this test. From what I know, this phone does accept 15W of fast charging and looking at the result of our battery charging test, yeah it is a 15W charger. That 5,000mAh battery takes about 2 hours to charge from 15% to 100%.

Software

As for the software, I’d say this is pretty basic. It comes with Android 12 with One UI 4.1 Core. The Core version here means a few of the more advanced features are not present – like Samsung Pay and Bixby Routines. However, we still have the Edge Panel – which is a feature that I use frequently.

I mean, if you used One UI before, then this is essentially the same experience – just missing a few features that you may or may not use.

I’m not sure about the software update policy of this phone – but knowing Samsung, I think it will get at least a year of updates? Maybe less frequently it at least we still get some updates.

Conclusion

Finally, for the price of RM799, this is a decent phone. It’s pretty standard in terms of what it can do and combined with some additional features from Samsung’s One UI Core, it’s a pretty good deal.
