Picking the right gaming headset can be tough. Consequently, with many options available and a range of price points to look at, it can be a minefield. This is particularly relevant if you have a limited budget. If you are a gamer who wants great quality but doesn’t want to break the bank, it can be particularly tough. Luckily, though, the Turtle Beach Recon 500 could be the solution.

This inexpensive, stylish, and well-built headset offers some high-end functionality at a fraction of the cost. What’s more, Turtle Beach is a household name that is known for its quality. Therefore, if you are planning to upgrade your existing setup, or buying a gift for a loved one, this accessory could tick every box.

What’s in the box of the Turtle Beach Recon 500?

  • The sturdy packaging is 100% recyclable and feels robust and hard-wearing. Moreover, it is adorned with colourful images and key selling points. Furthermore, it’s a nice size and protects the contents perfectly.
  • The Turtle Beach Recon 500. This headset comes in a range of colours and I’m reviewing the latest one. The Arctic camo option looks fantastic and can be paired with the React-R controller. Other key features to note are its lightweight nature, smooth finish, and wired connection. Other than this, there is a simple volume control located on the left ear cup and a mic mute button.
  • Detachable mic. Now, you may play solo and have no need for a microphone. The Turtle Beach Recon 500 covers this option. The Truspeak gaming microphone can be attached with ease and is simple to adjust.
  • PC audio cables. This headset is multifunctional and, accordingly, you are given a PC audio splitter for maximum compatibility.
  • Stickers and user manual. The final items are the stickers and the simple user manual. Fortunately, this headset is easy to understand, so the guide isn’t really essential.

Technical aspects.

Connection 3.5mm connection
Speaker frequency response 20 Hz – 20 kHz
Speakers 60mm Eclipse Dual Drivers
Earcup design Over-ear (Closed)
Earcup material Breathable memory foam
Mic design Removable Truspeak noise-cancelling
Cable length 1.3m braided with 3.5mm connection

The Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones are designed for multi-platform use. But arguably, they are focused on the FPS genre and team games. Therefore, it was fantastic that the microphone delivers crystal clear comms. Thanks to its noise-cancelling technology, you needn’t worry about garbled messages or horrendous feedback. Alongside this, the audio sounds amazing thanks to the revolutionary drivers.

The over-ear cups have 60mm Eclipse Dual Drivers that deliver meaty and aggressive sound. Consequently, you’ll hear every noise as the dedicated tweeters and woofers work in perfect harmony. What’s more, they are engineered with Accutone to create acoustic perfection. This level of tech in an entry-level device is almost unheard of. Subsequently, you get a lot of bang for your buck if you don’t wish to invest heavily.

Having looked at the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 and 700 Gen MAX 2 headsets, I was impressed with the audio quality and the extra features. However, the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headset still delivers an immersive and game-changing experience, nonetheless.

Comfort during extended gaming sessions.

If you play FPS games, you know you are in for the long haul. As such, your headphones must be comfortable, lightweight, and last each session. Fortunately, thanks to the wired approach, you needn’t worry about the juice running out. Instead, all you must do is plug in the 3.5mm audio jack and away you go.

So, that’s the power sorted! Now, let’s look at ear comfort and overcoming the issues of wearing glasses. No one likes to have hot ears. In fact, any headphones that do this are instantly dismissed. Fortunately, though, the breathable memory foam cushioning is durable and lightweight. Accordingly, wearing them for long periods wasn’t a problem. Furthermore, if you wear glasses, this is designed with them in mind. Thanks to the exclusive Prospecs design, little pressure is exerted onto the frame of your eyewear. This was phenomenal, as it enhances comfort and removes an annoying issue for many players.

Are the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headphones worth it?

Retailing at £50-£65, this is an early mid-range price point. Consequently, you don’t expect all the bells and whistles. However, you get a lot of bang for your buck and I wasn’t disappointed. Accordingly, I was extremely impressed by the build quality and its durability. Furthermore, the adjustable headband is strong, flexible, and easy to operate.

Alongside this, the over-ear cups are extremely comfortable and built to last. More importantly, though, is the sound quality and the microphone delivery. Both of these elements excelled, though there were some limitations compared to their high-end peers. At this price, you won’t find better, and therefore, I recommend you to buy them here!
