Rosenberg educator Melinda Cave receives Ashley Red Apple Award for excellence in teaching

Educator Melinda Cave at Rosenberg’s George Junior High School has received an Ashley Homestore Red Apple Award.

The Red Apple is awarded to a standout Houston-area educator each month during the school year.

Described by her school as a “beloved teacher, book enthusiast and fun-loving dancer,” Cave is the head of the school’s English department. She also serves as the school’s Campus Athletic Coordinator.

Cave is best known, however, for her spontaneous dance routines in the school’s morning drop-off line.

“Coach Cave is the teacher you want your kids to have,” said Angela Simmons, a former George Junior High teacher, in her award nomination. “She goes above and beyond for every soul she meets.”

Cave founded the school’s chapter of Project LIT which brings students together to discuss books. During the pandemic, Cave delivered books to students’ homes so they could continue the program virtually.

“She just lights up the entire building,” said Simmons. “There isn’t a soul who doesn’t love her.”

In addition to the Red Apple award, Cave also received a $250 Ashley gift card during the surprise presentation at the school.
