A lot of people wondered if Sam Huard was going to get some starts in 2021, and today is the day. The freshman quarterback has been announced as Washington’s starter for Friday’s yearly Apple Cup rivalry game with Washington State.
The 2021 starter, Dylan Morris, threw for a career-high 387 yards in the 20-17 loss at Colorado, but was also responsible for an offense that gave the ball up twice, including an 88-yard scoop and score and another fumble deep in Washington territory that led to Colorado’s other touchdown.
Huard, a former 5-star prospect from Kennedy Catholic in Burien, actually verbally committed to Washington just hours before the 2018 Apple Cup, a game UW won 28-15. Huard didn’t see any game time in the Colorado game because he had already played in three games and would not have been able to preserve his redshirt and also played in today’s Apple Cup. So the UW coaches made the decision to take the extra week to get him ready for his first career-start today.
So far in three games, Huard is 5-11 for 51 yards and a long completion of 23 yards.
