Much as we’ve seen on phones from Realme, OPPO, OnePlus, and more, Samsung is adding a method to ‘increase’ the amount of RAM on its smartphones. Instead of physically increasing the memory it will rather be done via software, using a percentage of the phone’s built-in storage to act as a page file does on a PC. Samsung is calling the feature RAM Plus, and it’s rolling out to the recently launched Galaxy A52s 5G initially.
The RAM Plus feature is being added to the Galaxy A52s 5G via a software update that carries build version A528BXXU1AUH9 and is currently rolling out in India. The Galaxy A52s 5G features a total of 6GB of physical RAM, but the software update will add 4GB of virtual RAM into the mix.
It’s important to note that virtual RAM is not as effective as physical RAM, and isn’t going to suddenly turn your Galaxy A52s 5G into a beast of a phone such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra or RedMagic 6S Pro. Other hardware limitations will still apply such as the processor and GPU, and indeed the type of physical RAM installed.
While the update is currently rolling out in India, it shouldn’t be too long before Samsung brings the RAM Plus feature to more devices in additional regions. Just remember to manage your expectations once it arrives.
