Samsung moves to update GPU drivers via the Google Play Store for faster performance tweaks

One of the best parts of the Google Play Store is the ability for OEMs to update components of their software separately from a full system update. Catch a bug in your Mail app? Just push the update to the Play Store and save the full system build for the next major update, easy.

While not everyone takes advantage of this, Samsung looks like they’ll be moving to the Play Store for GPU updates for their next phone, which is going to be a major improvement for frequent mobile gamers.

    Samsung Game Driver

This change comes in the form of the new Game Driver app that’s currently designed for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20. It’s a very simple app, since it exists only to update drivers on your phone, but that should help make the most popular games run faster if they get a supported update.

If you’ve dabbled in PC gaming, you might already be familiar with this. NVIDIA and AMD generally release game-specific driver updates around the launch of the game that fix bugs and enhance performance, and you don’t have to look very far back to see it in action. Cyberpunk 2077 had some issues with miniature trees floating everywhere on older NVIDIA drivers, but the latest drivers solved that problem. Obviously we don’t tend to see that same kind of problem on mobile games, but the idea is still the same.

Currently the latest driver update within the Game Driver app supports Black Desert Online, Fortnite, and Call of Duty: Mobile, with more games to follow suit. Your average indie games probably won’t see any specific fixes here, but major titles certainly will, especially from Samsung.
