One UI 6.1 launched with the Samsung Galaxy S24 devices in January, bringing a lot of improvements to Samsung’s take on the Android OS, including the pretty notable addition of Galaxy AI.

In late March, the update finally expanded its reach to other devices in Samsung’s portfolio, including the Galaxy S23 and Tab S9 series, Z Flip 5, and the Z Fold 5. And now, thanks to a Samsung Korea forum post, we know that Samsung plans to bring the One UI 6.1 update to their 2022 devices, particularly the S22 family, Z Flip 4, Z Fold 4, plus the Tab S8 series.

My daily driver falls in the S22 family, so I’m certainly very happy to be receiving the One UI 6.1 update at this point. However, the full extent of Galaxy AI features that these devices will come with isn’t certain yet.

Samsung initially stated that older devices didn’t have the hardware requirements to make running Galaxy AI practical, but they recently seemed to change their tune (which is one of the few times I’m happy a smartphone company is backtracking). The forum post does say that they’ll get “S23 FE-level AI”, and based on what that got last month, it should mean most of the features, including:

  • Live Translate
  • Circle to Search
  • Generative Edit
  • Note Assist

2021’s Samsung Devices Will Also Be Getting One UI 6.1 In May, Just Not With All The Goodies

If you’ve got any of the smartphones in the Samsung Galaxy S21 family or a Z Flip 3/Z Fold 3, there’s hope for you too. The same forum post indicated that these smartphones are also going to get One UI 6.1, and next month as well, which is great.

However, it shouldn’t be too surprising that if you do have any of these older devices, you won’t be getting the full suite of Galaxy AI features. After all, it seemed that Samsung had to put in some elbow grease to get the feature supported on 2022’s devices, so 2021 would naturally be even more unlikely.

However, if you’re on any of the aforementioned smartphones, you will at least be able to enjoy Circle to Search as well as Magic Rewrite. And when you think about it, One UI 6.1 doesn’t revolve around Galaxy AI, so you’ll still be able to enjoy the other performance improvements that come with the software update.
