Samsung scores another patent for a rollable phone, but don’t hold your breath

Rollable phones are definitely a thing. They’re not popular, and they barely even exist outside of concept renders, but phone makers and customers alike are paying close attention to what could be the next popular form factor for a smartphone.

Samsung is included in this, and they’ve been filing for some patents related to a potential rolling Galaxy smartphone one day. They’ve just scored another one, and some enthusiasts have cooked up a pretty cool looking concept render for what the device could be.

    Rollable Samsung Galaxy

The patent itself is pretty detailed, all things considered. It shows off what Samsung imagines their first rollable Galaxy would look like, and showcases how it would stretch out to give you a much larger screen to work with.

You’d still be able to use the phone like normal when it wasn’t rolled out, and there’s still all the usual smartphone stuff you expect. Cameras, power and volume buttons, speakers, and whatever else. No compromises here.

But you can extend that screen about 50% to put the phone into tablet mode, which is great for watching movies or being productive on the go.

Some other fans thought it was pretty cool, too, and they teamed up with LetsGoDigital to make a fancy render of what this might look like in real life.

It looks neat. We couldn’t guarantee that it’d be practical, good to use, or cost less than $4000, and there’s no promise that this would turn into anything real anyway.

But it’s fun to imagine, right?
