The iPhone Fold is rumored use a new thinner display panel in its construction, that supplier Samsung hasn’t used in its own devices.
The display of the iPhone Fold is its most important component, and requires more care than usual for manufacturing a smartphone. However, it seems that this display could be very different from the usual ones seen in foldable devices.
According to Naver leaker “Yeux1122” on Thursday, Apple will be using a display that requires a new process. Display partner Samsung has apparently not yet employed it in its own folding hardware.
The key change to the display panel is that it will have the touch sensor integrated into the display. In other foldable displays, this is often included as a separate layer, but it’s combined into the panel this time, the leaker insists.
The result is a reduction in thickness by approximately 19% compared to the panel used in Samsung’s Z Fold. This also helps to save weight for the device.
The leaker also believes that Samsung’s reduced thickness for the Fold 7 was because it was a transitional period to prepare for delivering Apple’s differing display tech.
It is offered that the internal display configuration feels more as an Apple technical requirement rather than simply accepting conventional technology. The component also apparently meets Apple’s demands on thickness, power to weight, brightness, and other factors.
The display panel’s color reproduction and brightness have also allegedly improved as part of the new processes, including higher peak brightness levels. It is unclear if this is relative to the more typically-constructed flexible display or to Apple’s existing smartphone screens.
The change in process is the latest to come from Yeux1122, who has a mixed track record for Apple leaks. Some big misses include claims Apple had abandoned 5G modem development and that there would be a 2TB option for the iPhone 16 Pro.
That said, the improvements do sound like things Apple could’ve mandated for its groundbreaking product.
Continued screen leaks
Previously, Yeux1122 claimed that the iPhone Fold’s large internal screen will measure 7.76 inches with a resolution of 2,713 by 1,920. Externally, the 5.49-inch display will have a resolution of 2,088 by 1,422.
They also mentioned the cameras in use, including an under-display version for the bigger screen, and a visible punch hole camera outside.
These resolution and size rumors have also been provided by other leakers, which helps their case for being right.
There have also been reports that Samsung Display is the sole supplier for the iPhone Fold. Apple had been reportedly working with LG Display as well as Samsung on the screen, but it is believed that Samsung will be the supplier this t8ime around.
Anticipated to ship in late 2026 or early 2027, the iPhone Fold could be a very expensive device. In April, it was forecast that the iPhone Fold could cost between $2,100 and $2,300.
