Samsung’s Exynos 2200 SoC with the new Xclipse 920 GPU is finally official

After a canceled launch date on January 11th, Samsung has finally taken the wraps off of the Exynos 2200 chipset that comes with the new Xclipse 920 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) which is based on AMD’s RDNA 2 technology using the Radeon graphics architecture. The collaboration with AMD in the graphics department gives huge hope that the Exynos 2200 will be able to better compete with the likes of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset.

Much like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the Exynos 2200 is based on the ARMv9 architecture and uses the same CPU designs. A single Cortex-X2 super core is accompanied by a trio of Cortex-A710 performance cores and a quartet of energy-efficient Cortex-A510 cores. Somewhat intriguing is the omission of the clock speeds that the various cores are running at, which is rumored to have cause issues with overheating which resulted in the canceled launch event on January 11th.

“AMD RDNA 2 graphics architecture extends power-efficient, advanced graphics solutions to PCs, laptops, consoles, automobiles and now to mobile phones. Samsung’s Xclipse GPU is the first result of multiple planned generations of AMD RDNA graphics in Exynos SoCs,” said David Wang, Senior Vice President of Radeon Technologies Group at AMD. “We can’t wait for mobile phone customers to experience the great gaming experiences based on our technology collaboration.”

It’s great that the Exynos 2200 is using the latest ARM cores, but of more interest is the Xclipse 920 GPU that is expected to offer much improved graphics performance over the Mali-G78MP14 GPU that was present on the Exynos 2100 that saw use on the Galaxy S21 series (outside of the US). With AMD’s input and technology such as its RDNA 2 Radeon graphics architecture, the Exynos 2200 will sport the first hardware accelerated ray tracing solution for smartphones along with variable rate shading.

What are ray tracing and variable rate shading?

    • Ray tracing is a revolutionary technology that closely simulates how light physically behaves in the real world. By calculating the movement and the color characteristic of light rays as they bounce off the surface, ray tracing produces realistic lighting effects for graphically rendered scenes.
    • Variable rate shading is a technique that optimizes GPU workload by allowing developers to apply lower shading rate in areas where overall quality will not be affected. This gives GPU more room to work on areas that matter most to the gamers and improve frame-rate for smoother gameplay.

Besidest the boost in performance and power efficiency, the Exynos 2200 boasts an upgraded NPU that allows more calculations in parallel that results in double the performance of its predecessor. A fast 3GPP Release 16 5G modem supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave networks, along with E-UTRAN New Radio – Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) which utilizes both 4G LTE and 5G NR signals which can boost the speed to 10Gbps.

The Exynos 2200 now supports image sensors with up to 200MP and can connect up to seven individual images sensors as well as drive four concurrently for advanced multi-camera setups.

Together with the NPU, the ISP utilizes an advanced content-aware AI camera for more refined and realistic results. When taking a photograph, the machine learning based AI camera recognizes multiple objects, the environment and faces within the scene. It then applies optimal settings for color, white balance, exposure, dynamic range and more to produce professional-level quality images.

With 8K resolution support, the Exynos 2200’s advanced multi-format codec (MFC) makes videos truly come to life. It decodes videos up to 4K at 240fps or 8K at 60fps and encodes up to 4K at 120fps or 8K at 30fps. In addition, the MFC integrates power efficient AV1 decoder enabling longer playback time. The advanced display solution features HDR10+ adding more dynamic range and depth to the picture and offers refresh rates of up to 144Hz for a more responsive and smoother transitioning experience when scrolling or playing games.

For safekeeping, the Exynos 2200 comes with Integrated Secure Element (iSE) to store private cryptographic keys as well as to play a role as RoT (Root of Trust). Also, an inline encryption HW for UFS and DRAM has been reinforced to have user data encryption safely shared only within the secure domain.

Samsung says that the Exynos 2200 processor is already in mass production which really isn’t much of a surprise considering that we are expected the Galaxy S22 range to be powered by the chip, outside of the US at least anyway.
