Satechi has unveiled a new compact NVMe SSD enclosure for portable high-speed storage and two mobile hubs to keep your devices powered and connected to your peripherals.
The new Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure accepts 2230mm NVMe solid-state drives. It supports data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, which works to about 1250 megabytes per second, making it ideal for mobile gamers, photographers, and videographers. NVMe, also known as NVM Express, is a protocol specification for accessing non-volatile storage media like solid-state drives (SSD). NVMe usually attaches via the PCI Express (PCIe) bus, taking advantage of multiple PCIe lanes to boost performance.
The enclosure uses USB-C Gen 2 to achieve significantly faster transfer speeds than traditional SSDs using the slower SATA interface. For those wondering, the enclosure is fast enough to support shooting 4K video at 120 frames per second in Apple’s ProRes Log format.
Unlike many similar products, Satechi’s Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure requires no special tools to install the SSDs and supports interchangeable storage. The swappable SSD design allows you to effortlessly switch between multiple SSDs for gaming, videography, music creation, and similar use cases. The enclosure accepts up to two terabytes of SSDs, giving you plenty of on-the-go storage in a compact design that goes anywhere with you.
The enclosure is built from aluminum, sports chamfered edges, and has scratch-resistant tempered glass, giving it a premium look. The braided cable with a durable plastic cover should last longer and better protect from electromagnetic interference than standard cables. This compact enclosure is meant to go places, so it comes with a convenient lanyard. Another nice touch is a write lock switch to prevent accidental file deletion.
Satechi has also unveiled two portable hubs. The first is called Mobile XR Hub with Audio and offers premium audio thanks to its 3.55mm audio jack which supports both audio input and output. This allows you to connect wired headphones with a built-in microphone to take calls, record voice memos, send voice commands, record podcasts, etc. There are also volume controls to play/pause, adjust volume, and skip/replay tracks.
The other, called Mobile XR Hub with microSD, swaps the headphone jack for a memory card slot that accepts standard microSD cards. If you have a digital camera, picking this hub will allow you to transfer photos and videos to your phone.
Each hub is equipped with two USB-C ports. The first is for transferring files and outputting video in 4K resolution, allowing a connected phone or tablet to output 4K visuals to an external monitor. USB-C data speeds are 10Gbps, enough to transfer about a hundred videos in less than 25 seconds, according to Satechi.
The other is for passthrough power up to 100W, providing “professional-grade” power via the USB Power Delivery protocol that enables safety features like overheating protection. Satechi has equipped the enclosure with a built-in fan instead of bulky metal vents, a smart design choice making the product lighter than an AA battery, just 35 grams or 1.23 ounces.
Both hubs use transparent glass, which admittedly looks cool but doesn’t serve any real purpose (it’s been a trend among hub makers). We like that the built-in USB-C male connector is extended, so it fits phones in cases easily. The ubiquitousness of the USB-C interface allows you to plug these hubs into a variety of devices and use them without installing any drivers or other software, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, Windows PCs, Android smartphones and tablets, Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck consoles, and so on.
Accordin to Satechi, both hubs include everything you need to take your virtual, augmented, or extended reality experiences to the next leve, l with compatibility for VITURE, Xreal, and Rokid glasses ensured. It doesn’t hurt that these are really tiny hubs, measuring just 61.5 mm wide, 23.5 mm deep, and 8.8 mm tall (2.4 x 0.9 x 0.35 inches).
You can order your Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure, Mobile XR Hub with Audio, and the Mobile XR Hub with microSD via Satechi’s web store and its Amazon store. The Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure costs $60, and the mobile hubs are $45 each. The enclosure and the hubs are only available in Space Gray, complementing your Apple esthetics.
