Apple iOS 15 has been a dumpster fire, launching with numerous bugs, criticised for leaving hacks unpatched and introducing serious privacy concerns. And now a new warning has been issued to millions of iPhone users.

Spotted by 9to5Mac, both iOS 15.1 and iOS 15.1.1 are causing significant connectivity issues for Bluetooth hands-free system devices in cars. The problems appear to primarily affect iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 ranges but they are also spread across numerous automotive brands.
Digging into multiple threads on Apple Support Communities as well as the comments on the 9to5Mac article, connectivity problems I have discovered issues are being reported with Acura, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Toyota and Volvo models. Moreover, there are inherently serious safety implications from this problem.
“I use bluetooth in my Highlander for a call and about 3 minutes in the bluetooth drops, making me find my phone and quickly putting it on speaker (while driving) to finish the call or hang it up. This is soooo unsafe and makes me not want to use the phone in the car,” points out one user.
As it stands, no successful workaround has been found and Apple has not publicly acknowledged the problem. But with over 100M iPhone 12 models sold and early iPhone 13 sales outpacing its predecessor, pressure is going to mount quickly on Apple to solve this.

Of course, the irony for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 owners is iOS 15.1.1 was specifically released to “improve call drop performance” but it appears to have had the opposite effect. Interestingly, a number of iPhone 13 owners are also reporting that the claims are nothing new and they have been suffering since iOS 15 launched, which could potentially point to a hardware flaw just weeks after Apple expanded its iPhone 12 recall over audio problems.
I have contacted Apple and will update this post when/if I receive a response. Meanwhile, for those looking to upgrade their iPhone, you have been warned.
