DUBOIS COUNTY, Ind. (WFIE) – Deputies with the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office says a victim fell prey to a scam involving bitcoin machines.
They say the victim lost a considerate amount of money.
According to a Facebook post, the victim logged onto their computer, which started flashing with a telephone number on the screen to fix the problem.
When the victim called that number, the scammer told them their checking account was hacked.
The victim was then asked to withdraw all the money from the account and put in into a bitcoin machine.
Deputies say the victim withdrew the money and put it into two separate Bitcoin machines.
The victim, still on the phone with the scammer, gave them the information on the Bitcoin, and was told the money would be returned the next day.
The scammer accessed the Bitcoin and took it.
The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office warns to never give out personal or banking account information.
Deputies say the best thing to do is hang up, or speak with family member or law enforcement before taking any action.
