Your Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control now doubles as a HomePod. That’s right, a new update adds Siri to your SmartThermostat, allowing you to kick Alexa to the curb and use “Hey Siri” commands to adjust the temperature, schedule reminders, play music, and more.

During its June WWDC event, Apple quietly announced that it would offer Siri integration to HomeKit accessory makers. This is very different from basic HomeKit support—now that manufacturers can build Siri into their products, they can develop their own HomePod smart speakers or add HomePod features to various smart home products.

Ecobee’s SmartThermostat with Voice Control has an Echo smart speaker built-in, with microphones and all. As such, it’s the perfect product to debut third-party Siri integration. It supports all the same features as a HomePod, and can even join other AirPlay devices for whole-home music streaming.

Setting up Siri on the Ecobee SmartThermostat is easy. Just pair the thermostat to HomeKit from its built-in screen and add it as an accessory in the Home app on your iPhone. Then, click the “Speak to Siri” option to enable Siri voice control. If your SmartThermostat is already connected to HomeKit, you should see a card in your Home app asking to enable Siri commands.

Keep in mind that this feature is only available on the Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control. And while Siri integration is a nice addition to the SmartThermostat, I wouldn’t buy one as a HomePod replacement. The thermostat’s microphone and speakers face the wall, so it won’t match the sound quality or range of an actual smart speaker.
