Skittles lime flavor is back after eight years of green apple

After an eight-year hiatus, lime-flavored Skittles are returning to the candy’s signature red bag.

For more than three decades, the lime-flavored pieces held the role of the green Skittle. But in 2013, the Mars Wrigley company benched lime in favor of green apple-tasting pieces.

Now, lime has be reinstated to the Original Flavor pack, the company announced Monday, recreating the combination of orange, lemon, lime, strawberry and grape flavors that first launched in 1979.

Starting in Oct., Skittles bags with lime candies included will begin appearing on shelves. In the coming months, the refreshed candy will be stocked nationwide.

Mars Wrigley called the announcement “the moment Skittles fans have been waiting eight years for.”

“It’s no secret that lime has been a hot topic for Skittles fans since we replaced them with green apple back in 2013,” Fernando Rodrigues, Mars Wrigley senior brand manager, said in a press release. “Green apple has had a good run, but the fans have spoken and it’s time for lime to return to the rainbow.”

Sour Skittles packs will also include the lime flavor, the company said.

In 2013, green apple was said to have performed better in taste tests, leading to its replacement of lime. The lime flavor has appeared sporadically since then, including as a special all-lime pack in July.
