Interior Define’s Sloan sofa was a strong contender as a pick in our first round of testing for an earlier version of this guide, and the company’s sofas are comfortable and well constructed. Interior Define stood out in part because of its sheer range of highly customizable contemporary-modern styles and sizes, including sleepers and storage sofas, from sprawling to compact. However, in 2022 and early 2023, a series of customer complaints and industry reports prompted us to warn against the brand. People were not receiving couches they’d paid for, the company was failing to respond to phone calls and emails, and finally, in the first week of 2023, Business of Home reported, the company announced it would be dissolved. (The brand, for their part, released a cryptic Instagram post, saying, “Over the next few weeks we will be pausing all social media posting to focus on our customers and community.”) According to a story in Architectural Digest, the online design platform Havenly will be purchasing Interior Define’s intellectual property and replacing the staff, but maintaining the brand’s existing studios and honoring their backorders. We will update this guide as we learn more about the leadership change, but for now, we advise against buying from Interior Define.
