Sony Updates Its Budget Wireless Earbuds With Better ANC and Touch Controls

Summary

  • Sony’s new WF-C710N earbuds have improved ANC with dual microphones for better noise-canceling.
  • WF-C710N features “Ambient Sound Mode” for hearing surroundings and adjusts for the best listening experience.
  • WF-C710N offers up to 30 hours of listening with a charging case and 8.5 hours with earbuds only.

Sony makes some of the best high-end headphones on the market, but it has products for the budget-minded as well. Today, the company announced the WF-C710N wireless ANC earbuds, designed to deliver top-notch audio in a compact, affordable package. In addition, Sony is adding color options to the existing WH-CH720N and WH-CH520 wireless headphones.

As you might expect from mid-range ANC earbuds, the previous model (WF-C700N) didn’t have the greatest active noise cancellation. Sony claims that’s one of the biggest improvements this time around. With dual microphones to capture surrounding noise, the WF-C710N should offer upgraded noise-canceling compared to their predecessors. However, it’s not the same tech that’s found in Sony’s premium ANC earbuds.

If you still want to hear your environment, the WF-C710N also features “Ambient Sound” mode, which uses microphones to pipe in sound from your surroundings. The Sound Connect app also allows you to adjust the ambient sound levels in 20 increments or use the “Voice Passthrough” setting for quick chats without removing your earbuds. “Adaptive Sound Control” is a smart feature that senses your surroundings and activity, and then adjusts ambient sound settings for the best listening experience. What’s even cooler is it can apparently remember your frequently visited locations and automatically switch to the sound modes that suit the situation.

Battery life is another area where mid-range earbuds can suffer. Sony says the WF-C710N are designed for all-day comfort and use, and with the charging case, you can get up to 30 hours of listening time. With the earbuds alone, you’re looking at 8.5 hours of listening with ANC enabled. You can stretch the total time to 40 hours if you disable ANC. Charging-wise, a quick five-minute charge gives you an extra 60 minutes of listening.

The Best Wireless Earbuds of 2024

The best wireless earbuds allow for complete untethered use of your smartphone, tablet, or computer, allowing you to enjoy high-quality audio and stay connected via Bluetooth. In determining what to look for with wireless earbuds, you need to consider four main criteria: comfort, audio quality, battery life, and ease of use. Today, many wireless earbuds come with active noise cancelation that automatically or manually adjusts based on the level of ambient sound. Good earbuds also have settings that can be toggled to eliminate all or some background noise. Other options come with dedicated smartphone apps that allow you to change EQ presets, configuring the audio exactly as you want to hear it.

In terms of design, the WF-C710N earbuds don’t look crazily different from their predecessor. The physical buttons have been replaced by touch sensors. They’re available in four colors: “Glass Blue,” which is translucent blue, along with Pink, White, and Black. The WF-C710N earbuds are priced at $119.99, and you can pre-order them today from Sony and Amazon. Delivery is estimated to be at the end of March or early April.

Meanwhile, Sony has also added new color options for the WH-CH720N Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones and WH-CH520 Wireless Headphones. Both models will now be available in a pastel pink, and the WH-CH520 will also come in a soft yellow. The WH-CH720N are priced at $149.99, while the WH-CH520 are $59.99.
