Sony is preparing to launch its latest over-ear noise cancelling headphones on or around May 15, according to a new leak.
Dealabs spotted information posted to Reddit (via Android Authority) surrounding the successor to the five-star WH-1000XM5 headphones, which push for top spot in our best noise-cancelling headphones line-up.
A Reddit user spotted a listing on Amazon’s Spanish retail site (now deleted) that reveals plenty about the WH-1000XM6, and it appears as if they’ll be a decent update rather than an essential upgrade.
Firstly, the reported QN3 HD processor powering the whole deal will be a staggering seven times faster than the QN1 chip that appeared in the XM5. According to the report the chip will assist with real-time noise cancelation ,while adapting to things like ambient noise and, interestingly, changes in air pressure.
Secondly, the listing speaks of an AI-powered six-microphone for taking calls, 30-hours of battery life with an incredible 3 hours of battery life from three minutes on charge. That’s incredible.
And, thankfully, the listing speaks of a 3.5mm headphone jack remaining part of the equation to ensure there’s the highest quality Hi-Res audio available from those 30mm drivers.
The only bummer appears to be the price, which is going up $50 to $449.99 compared to the XM5 which cost $399.99 out of the gate. That’s about £35 in proper money.
The new model will have to go some to justify an upgrade given the XM5 are a bona-fide five-star pair of noise-cancelling headphones.

The rich but detailed sound impresses, the noise-cancelling is strong, the call quality is superb; and the range of features and customisation they offer is unmatched. They’re not the best for ANC any more but they’re less expensive than most of their main rivals.”
