When it comes to wireless earbuds, Sony has some of the best options out there, especially in the company’s WF-1000XM lineup. Those earbuds have fantastic noise cancellation, amazing audio quality, and solid battery life, all in one package. Now, the WF-1000XM5 are out, and they look great.
Sony’s release schedule for premium earbuds and headphones is pretty well known by this point. The company has been releasing wireless earbuds in odd years, while wireless over-ear headphones are released in even years. In 2021, Sony released the WF-1000XM4 wireless earbuds, while 2022 saw the release of the WH-1000XM5 wireless headphones — the successors of the WH-1000XM4, released in 2020. Like clockwork, the new WF-1000XM5 earbuds are here as Sony’s big 2023 audio release, and they’re not disappointing one bit.

Sony focused on improving three key points with these earbuds: noise cancelling, sound quality, and call quality. The pair features Sony’s new V2 Integrated Processor, as well as a dedicated noise-canceling sub-processor, the QN2e. This dual-processor setup is beneficial for both sound quality and noise cancellation. The earbuds have 8.4mm drivers (which Sony calls “Dynamic Driver X”) in comparison to the WF-1000XM4’s 6mm ones, and they have dual feedback mics that are able to monitor noise in lower frequencies.
The earbuds have a higher-quality DAC, support spatial audio, and have Bluetooth LE support for lower latencies, making them great for gaming and, well, pretty much everything. With these changes, Sony says that it has achieved best-in-class noise cancellation once again, although that’s something that users will have the final verdict on.
Battery life should also be a strong point for the new earbuds. Sony is promising 8 hours of listening on a single charge, with the charging case being able to provide up to 24 hours in total. Furthermore, the earbuds come with fast charging that can give you 60 minutes of listening out of just 3 minutes of charging, so if you need a quick top up to get through your day, you’ll be able to get one rather quickly.
