Darren Yates

If you hear the magnificent seven bet then it is talking about Darren Yates. This man’s life changed in 1996 with a £62 bet. So why the name magnificent seven? Yates staked on only one jockey to win all his seven rides for the day. Frankie Dettori was that jockey and he won all seven as predicted to have Yates a £550,000 win. He owes the jockey a big thank you!

Mick Gibbs

We don’t know what was going on in Mick Gibbs’s head when he placed a £0.30 bet on games with a total odds of 1,666,666/1. This roofer chose to stake 30 pence on a 15-leg accumulator. A regular bettor would have cancelled the bet at the sight of those odds but Gibbs was built differently. And it won him £500,000.

14 of his games won easily as predicted but his final one proved a bit stubborn. After a penalty shootout, he won at last! His heart must have leapt to his throat all through the shootout.

The interesting part is that it wasn’t his first time winning big. In 1999, he made £157,000 from a £2.50 bet after predicting nine football games correctly. How could a man have so much luck?

Peter Edwards

Peter Edwards won big in a rather unusual way. When his grandson was born, he staked that the little boy would grow up to be a professional footballer and represent his country, Wales. And that was it! A £50 bet. Harry Wilson, his grandson, was a great footballer and he became the youngest player to represent Wales internationally at 16 years old.

And Peter Edwards, who was 62 years old at that time won £125,000. It was more than enough for him to retire. No one knows what that old man saw that prompted him to make the bet, but we would also like to know!
