Tech firms in HK should review strategies for AI, refer to DeepSeek’s success: GBA group leader

Technology enterprises worldwide, including those in Hong Kong, should comprehensively review strategies for leveraging artificial intelligence, an industry group leader said.

Greater Bay Area International Information Technology Industry Association vice president Herbert Chia Pun-Kok said this is also an opportunity for Hong Kong’s digital economy development and suggested local technology enterprises reference mainland enterprises such as DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence software company.

Speaking on a radio program Sunday, Chia said DeepSeek’s low-cost AI model has exerted significant pressure on American technology companies.

“The reduction in the cost of AI has the potential to catalyze the development of the industry as a whole, and DeepSeek’s success is not an isolated example, as more similar mainland AI companies will emerge in the future,” he said.

In addition, Chia said fresh graduates possess a heightened capacity for learning and a greater openness to new concepts, while experienced professionals can guide the younger generation.

He underscored the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges posed by the widespread adoption of AI and the necessity for international collaboration to resolve these issues.
