Tesla Smoke Bombed a Model Y to Show Off Its Fancy HEPA Cabin Filter – Review Geek

Tesla recently released a neat video to its YouTube channel showing how impressive its massive HEPA-rated filters, combined with Bioweapon Defense Mode, are at filtering air and keeping the cabin air clean.

For those unaware, Tesla’s Model X and later the Model S and Model Y come equipped with large HEPA filters to provide hospital-grade air quality inside the vehicle cabin. The company has bragged about the feature dating back to 2016, but this new video demonstrates it visually using red smoke. Tesla throws a Model Y and a competing BMW vehicle in a bubble, fires up some smoke bombs and turns the air to full blast, and you can see the results below.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has mentioned the feature several times, including during recent California wildfires. Here’s how Tesla explained the system:

“We have developed a HEPA filtration system capable of stripping the outside air of pollen, bacteria, and pollution before they enter the cabin and systematically scrubbing the air inside the cabin to eliminate any trace of these particles. The end result is a filtration system hundreds of times more efficient than standard automotive filters.”

In the Model Y, Tesla activated its “bioweapon defense mode,” which pressurizes the cabin and forces all the air to go through the HEPA filter. When it’s fully pressurized and working at full blast, Tesla claims the system can protect against a bioweapon attack, which is where it got its name.

In some Tesla vehicles, whenever climate control pulls in outside air, the HEPA-filter system gets activated. It can remove up to 99.97% of airborne particulates, including smoke, bacteria, and pollen. The video shows how none of the red smoke enters the vehicle, but it’s more of a visual demonstration than anything else, as the company didn’t expand the test further.

You can clearly see the Tesla Model Y remains smoke-free and keeps all the red smoke out of inside the vehicle. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about the other car in the test.

Tesla is essentially showing off that whether it’s a bioweapon attack, some sort of pandemic, or a wildfire, its filtration system does a better job than competing vehicles.
