Robot vacuums have remained popular since they first hit showroom floors (and, well, floors everywhere, actually). But with so many brands and models out there, it can be challenging to sort through them all and find one that’s actually good (and not terribly expensive). Fortunately, we did all the hard work for you, just like these vacuums will, and rounded up the best robot vacuums across all price ranges.
What to Look for in a Robot Vacuum
Although robot vacuum cleaners all have the same purpose, their design and features will vary from model to model. Ultimately, it all comes down to your budget and the feature set you want, so it’s worth taking a moment to familiarize yourself with them:
- Suction Power: This one’s a no-brainer—you need a robot vacuum that sucks! Yep, it needs to be able to handle dust, pet hair, crumbs, and the other random bits of debris that always tend to find their way to the floor. Suction is measured in Pascals (or “Pa,” abbreviated). Keep in mind, though, that while these vacs are great at what they do, they still aren’t as powerful as traditional vacuums and might not be able to tackle fine particles or deeply embedded gunk. Good vacs will also be equally adept at cleaning both carpet and hard surfaces; if you only have the latter, your vac won’t need as much suction power.
- Navigation: A robot vacuum is only as good as its navigation abilities. They need to be able to map out and travel around every inch of floor, yes, but they also need to be able to detect objects (like furniture), obstacles (toys, socks, wires, or pets), and any no-go boundaries you set. Typically, these vacs use LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors to navigate, but some also rely on algorithms, lasers, or cameras to get around successfully. Many even use smart maps (or intelligent zoning) to create a basic mock-up of your home’s layout so it can learn where walls, furniture, and stairs are; some even let you add no-go zones manually in their companion app (like by curios holding priceless trinkets or by pet food bowls). This helps keep them out of trouble and even lets you tell them to clean one specific area as needed.
- Design: Generally, these vacs look pretty similar, though some have unique shapes that grant them extra functionality. Some have super-low profiles, allowing them to run underneath couches or bookshelves; D-shaped vacuums make it easier to catch dirt in corners. Larger vacuums may have longer brushes, more secondary brushes, and larger dust bin capacities. It all comes down to what specifics you want for your home.
- Battery: Part of the fun of these little guys is that they work wirelessly (and tirelessly) to clean your floors for you. But that also means they run on a battery that won’t last forever. This is especially true for hybrid models that vacuum and mop. If you live in a smaller home or apartment, this shouldn’t be a huge deal; but if your home is quite large, you should carefully choose a vac with a hefty battery capacity or be cool with it returning to its dock to recharge then picking up where it left off.
- Volume: As you’d expect from a vacuum, these, too, make noise. Some can run more quietly, around 55dB (as loud as a regular conversation or moderate rainfall), but most are louder, about 65-70dB (think city traffic, a hairdryer, or a noisy restaurant). Because they can take a while to clean your floors thoroughly, this can be a concern, especially if you have a sleeping baby, though you can typically set them up to run on a schedule or when it’s convenient for you.
- Smart Features & Privacy: Sure, standard robot vacuums work just fine, but believe us: It’s nice to have some smart functionality. Many newer models can empty their own bins, detect collisions, run via voice commands, or connect to feature-rich apps that let you control cleaning. That’s all fine and well, but what about privacy? Do they store, transmit, or encrypt data like your home layout, Wi-Fi network name, or camera feed (if the vac has one)? Does the companion app (again, if applicable) ask for extensive permissions? These are generally secure, but certain smart features almost always mean potential vulnerabilities. We recommend reading manufacturer privacy policies, noting which permissions its app asks for, and double-checking whether the vac you chose uses a camera to navigate.
- Additional Functionality: One of our favorite features newer robot vacuums are starting to offer is mopping. Yep, they’ll mop your floor after sucking up all the crud that was on them, sparing you yet another unpleasant chore. Most can also automatically return to their docks to charge, be programmed to run on a schedule, and even empty their dust bins into a compatible canister attached to the base (though not every model offers this excellent feature). Again, there are a lot of features to wade through with these gadgets; it just comes down to which ones you want and, of course, your budget.
