Why it’s great
An iconic, practical design. Introduced in 1967, Kartell Componibili plastic storage tables offer a unique look that somehow also feels instantly familiar. (Personally, I think they recall Big Bird’s hip ’70s pad.) Cute and versatile, they come in a multitude of colors and three sizes with either two, three, or four cubbies that each open via a curved, horizontal sliding door.
So. Many. Options. Different retailers sometimes offer different colors, and some are only available in specific sizes. If you can’t find the exact combo of color and height you like directly from Kartell, search retailers like Lumens and 2Modern. We especially love Design Within Reach’s two-tone exclusives, like the desert sage/vanilla cream pictured at top.
You can use them anywhere in a home. If you ever decide to refresh your bedroom, these can be repurposed as a small side table with extra storage in a variety of different spaces — dens, offices, bathrooms, anywhere you want a pop of color and a place to hide clutter. And if space is limited, you can stack them for even more storage.
There’s a version made from recycled materials. For anyone trying to avoid buying new plastic, Kartell offers the Componibili Recycled, which is made from a thermoplastic technopolymer sourced from industrial scrap. But it comes in only three colors: black, white, and silver. (Silver was unavailable at the time of this publishing.)
Flaws but not dealbreakers
The surface area is small. No matter what height you get, the top surface diameter remains the same — a meager 12.6 inches. So this isn’t a good choice if you keep a bunch of items on top of your nightstand. You’ll have quite a bit of storage space inside it, but you’ll have to feel around for what you need unless you lean over the side of the bed.
White versions may yellow over time. We’ve seen vintage white Kartell pieces that have yellowed. This isn’t a surprise, because they’re made from ABS plastic, which is known to do this if exposed to sunlight. (Lego bricks are made from the same plastic, and white ones have the same issue.) So if you get a white Componobili, keep it away from windows.
