If you, a friend, or a family member are a beauty lover, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the brand Dyson. No, it’s not because of the vacuums. The Dyson Airwrap has become a must-have wishlist item during the holidays, but with a hefty price tag, you might want to check out some alternatives.

Why check alternatives? The Dyson Airwrap is a really cool product but it’s also a really expensive product. Here’s the rundown on how the Airwrap works and some viable (and more affordable!) alternatives.

Happy Holidays! This article is part of our Holiday 2021 Gift Guide where you can find the best-of-the-best recommendations from LifeSavvy, How-To Geek, and Review Geek to help you pick the perfect gift for everyone on your list!

What’s the Deal with the Dyson Airwrap?

The Airwrap retails for a cool $549, but before your jaw hits the floor, keep in mind that the device comes with two curling wand attachments, a hairdryer attachment, two smoothing brush attachments, and a round brush attachment. Altogether, you technically get six tools in one.

But the pricy holiday gift’s most well-known claim to fame is its use of something called the Coanda Effect. This sees the styler use airflow to wrap your strands around a barrel or round brush (get it? Airwrap?) while it also dries and curls it without excessive heat. According to Dyson, this could help avoid damage to your hair.

    The Best Dyson Airwrap Alternatives

When it comes to shopping for Dyson Airwrap alternatives it’s a little tricky. Unfortunately, Dyson’s Airwrap is the only tool that uses the Coanda Effect, so there is no direct alternative. Admittedly, as someone who has an Airwrap, it is pretty cool. At the end of the day, however, mastering the tool involves figuring out just the right amount of hair to section off at a time, how to direct your strands so the airflow doesn’t blow it into a tangled mess, and how to get curls created without heat to stay in place all day.

So for those with the cash to spare and a love of beauty, buying the Airwrap and taking time to practice with it (or purchasing it for someone who will also enjoy learning how to use a new beauty tool) will be worth it.

For others—aka those who don’t want to drop over $500 on a hair tool—you or your loved one can get similar results for a fraction of the price. In fact, some options are so wallet-friendly that you can mix and match the tools before even getting near Dyson’s price tag.

Best for Blowouts: Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer Hot Air Brush

    Revlon

The most oft-cited Dyson Airwrap alternative is Revlon’s One-Step. While this tool doesn’t feature the attachments of the Airwrap, it’s a bonafide smash when it comes to getting a blow-out at home.

The styler is a hybrid round brush and hairdryer. Instead of fighting with your hair, a blow dryer, and an actual round brush to achieve smooth strands, lightly curled ends, and volume at the room, this does it all at the same time. Beginning with damp hair, run the tool from roots to ends several times to dry the hair. Then, when the hair is only slightly damp, rotate the brush under slightly to curl your ends. The result is a bouncy look that looks like it came straight from the salon.

Don’t believe me? Well, with over 300,000 thousand Amazon reviews, it still manages to have over a four out of five-star rating, and the reviews are stellar. Plus, at under $40, it’s pennies compared to the Dyson.

Best Multi-Tool Product: NuMe Octowand 8-in-1 Curling Wand Set

    NuMe

For those who want more than blowout capabilities, NuMe’s Octowand is a great option. This handy little tool features a whopping eight attachments to get a variety of curl styles, and at under $180, you get a massive deal compared to the Dyson.

In the kit, you’ll get the wand’s base alongside attachments to create everything from beach waves to ringlets to barrel curls. Basically, if you like a certain type of curl in your hair, this wand can achieve it. While it doesn’t promise the heat protection of the Dyson, it does have a temperature gauge so you can monitor the amount of heat you’re putting on your hair. Plus, with infrared technology, the heat penetrates the shaft quickly allowing for less time wrapped around the wand and ultimately less damage.

    Best Easy-to-Use Tool: Beachwaver

    Beachwaver

While yes, Dyson is the only brand that uses the Coanda Effect to curl hair, the Beachwaver does something similar to make curling your hair easier. In fact, it’s such a neat product we gave it a huge shoutout in our guide to getting beach waves (without going to the beach).

Unlike traditional curling irons and wands that see you having to wrap your hair around the barrel (and potentially burning yourself), the Beachwaver does that work for you.

Simply grab a one-inch wide section of your hair and clip the bottom of it onto the barrel. Then, press the arrow on the handle, and the barrel will rotate practically curling your hair for you.

While sure, it’s not the Coanda Effect, it’s still pretty cool (and easy to use).

    Best Hairdryer: T3 Cura Hairdryer

A hairdryer is next to a woman's photo of her hair wavy and then straight.
    T3

Part of the appeal of the Airwrap is that you also get the brand’s SuperSonic hairdryer when you purchase the whole kit. There’s an attachment that transforms the tool into the infamous dryer. The T3 Cura does the same job, though, for half the cost.

The T3 might not have attachments, but if you’re comfortable using a paddle or round brush, you can get a great (and quick) blowout with the tool. The dryer has three heat settings so you can adjust how much is being used on your hair at one time, and depending on how thick your hair is, you can also choose between two airspeeds as well. With negative ion technology, the dryer also helps to fight frizz as you dry, and the wide airflow opening helps cover more hair at one time for faster drying.

Best Straightener: L’ange Le Duo 360 Airflow Styler

    L’Ange

The one thing that the Dyson Airwrap doesn’t have is a dedicated hair straightener. While you can use the smoothing brushes to get a sleeker appearance, for pin-straight hair, you’ll need a more specific tool. That’s where the L’ange comes in.

The L’Ange Le Duo is first a hair straightener. Designed to release cool air from the vents on the outside, the tool keeps the hair straightener longer, and the titanium plates ensure heat is distributed evenly. But the thing that makes the tool the best straightening dupe for the Airwrap is that it’s also a curling tool (it is called Le Duo, after all).

By flipping the hair over the barrel as you pull it through your strands, you’ll get a perfect barrel curl. The outside airflow cools the hair as you go helping to set it and hold the curl longer.

If you were thinking of splurging on yourself or a friend this Christmas and purchasing the Dyson Airwrap, that’s great. But if you’ve been eyeing the tool and are bummed about the price tag, there are options. Yes, the tool is certainly one of the most tech-forward on the market, but when it comes to cost-effectiveness, these alternatives are stellar tools with a tag that won’t make your jaw drop.
