The ITIL Lifecycle: From Processes to a Practical Value Chain

ITIL has become the de facto standard for service management. It is used by some of the world’s largest companies as well as newer IT organizations. This article explores how you can use ITIL to help develop a value chain that includes key components such as processes, people and technology.

What is ITIL?

ITIL is a set of best practices for IT service management, and is published by the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC). It was originally developed by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) in the United Kingdom. ITIL provides a framework for managing IT services in an organization to ensure that these services meet business requirements.

ITIL describes five phases in the lifecycle of an IT service: Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation and Continual Service Improvement. Each phase consists of several processes or activities that must be followed in order to manage an IT service effectively.

What is the ITIL Lifecycle?

The ITIL lifecycle is a framework that describes how a service provider should go about achieving their goals. It involves five different phases of the lifecycle:

  • Service Strategy — A service provider defines its scope and strategy for a particular service. This phase also includes identifying the financial and operational objectives of the project, as well as developing metrics for measuring success.
  • Service Design — The service designer comes up with ideas for how to deliver an effective IT solution. This may include gathering requirements from stakeholders, designing processes or systems, defining technical standards and policies, testing prototypes, etc.
  • Service Transition — After all of this planning has been done in previous phases, it’s time to put things into action! This phase focuses on deploying services according to plan while ensuring quality assurance throughout each step of deployment (e.g., if there are any issues with new software deployments). The goal here is not only delivering high-quality products on time but also finding out what went wrong so we can improve upon our work next time around!

What are the benefits of ITIL?

The following are the benefits of ITIL:

  • ITIL helps organizations of all sizes improve IT services.
  • ITIL helps organizations reduce costs.
  • ITIL helps organizations improve customer satisfaction.
  • ITIL helps organizations improve employee satisfaction.
  • ITIL helps organizations improve their overall performance and results with respect to the effective delivery of business value from information technology (IT) services, with a focus on customer demand for consistent, reliable service delivery and strategic alignment between strategy, organizations and infrastructure

What is the scope of ITIL Foundation Certification?

The ITIL Foundation certification is a starting point for IT service management practitioners. It provides you with a basic understanding of how to apply the framework and how it can help your organization improve its processes.

The ITIL Foundation module covers the concepts and practices of Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition and Continual Service Improvement. It also includes an introduction to both information security management (ISM) and technical management disciplines within ITSM.

How long is an ITIL Foundation certification valid for?

An ITIL Foundation certification is valid for three years. After that, you can renew it for a further three years, until you reach the maximum of 10 years.

To renew your ITIL Foundation certification, you need to:

  • Be in full-time employment as an IT or business manager (or equivalent) and have been so for at least one year since passing the exam.
  • Have achieved a minimum of 52 credits in the previous 3 years (i.e., an average of 14 credits per year). If you’re eligible, we’ll send you an email with instructions on how to re-register on our website.

Does it matter if I am not working in an IT department to get an ITIL certificate?

No. You can be working in any department, and still get an ITIL certificate.

ITIL is a very useful way to learn more about IT, no matter what your job role is. And if you’re looking for a new position or promotion, it’s also a good way to show that you know what you’re doing when it comes to IT service management courses!

How long does it take to earn an ITIL foundation certificate?

It depends on how much time you dedicate to studying, but it takes about 6-8 weeks to complete the course. The exam is available at any time and you can take it as many times as you like.

It takes time, but it’s worth it.

It is recommended that you do not expect to be certified in a week, month, year or decade. You will need to invest time and effort into the process. It is also recommended that you not wait until you have a century before attempting certification.
