When the OnePlus 9 series launched earlier this year it was also the debut of the brand’s partnership with the Hasselblad camera company although its influence was limited at the time to calibrating the colors in the camera app. Today sees a software update roll out to the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro which brings a new camera feature called Hasselblad XPan Mode that recreates the unique experience of vintage image capturing.

XPan Mode introduces a 65:21 ratio shooting mode called “very wide mode” by OnePlus that emulates the unique experience offered by Hasselblad’s classic XPan camera. The XPan feature emulates a 30mm image from the OnePlus 9’s ultra-wide sensor and a 45mm image from the main camera with each image being cropped down to 20MP. You’ll also get to experience a black-and-white simulation and a color filter, both of which are co-developed by OnePlus and Hasselblad. The results of the new XPan Mode are evident in the sample gallery above.

Hsiaohua Cheng, Head of Imaging at OnePlus, said:

“Working with Hasselblad on XPan Mode has helped us recreate their legendary experience of viewing your photographs in a 65:24 format before shooting a wide, panoramic image in 30mm and 45mm. Using XPan Mode on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro will let our users see the world around them through a unique lens, and we’re very excited to see how this format will be utilized by our users and photographers around the world.”

It’s good to see a new camera feature added to the OnePlus 9 series which has been co-developed by the phone brand and Hasselblad and definitely helps reassure those who might have been skeptical of the partnership when it was first announced. You’ll need to have updated your OnePlus 9 handset to the latest OxygenOS build which is v11.2.9.9 in order to check out the new XPan Mode.
