Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips get a lot of the spotlight, but real Android enthusiasts know that MediaTek chips aren’t slouches either, especially as many smartphone manufacturers depend on them as the beating heart of their mid-range options.
In fact, MediaTek sold more chips than Qualcomm in the last quarter of last year, showing that there’s a lot of faith in them on the manufacturer’s side. A new mid-range chip has joined MediaTek’s portfolio — the Dimensity 6300. Built on a 6nm process, it brings some improvements over the preceding Dimensity 6100+.
A Faster CPU
The Dimensity 6300 brings improvements to the CPU speed. While it maintains the two Cortex-A76 cores and the six Cortex-A55 cores in its predecessor, it bumps up the clock speed on the A76 cores to 2.4GHz (from 2.2GHz). MediaTek says this gives 10% better performance.
High-Resolution Camera Support
The chip comes with native support for up to 108MP primary cameras, and can also support up to dual 16MP camera setups. It also comes with what MediaTek calls pre-integrated multi-frame noise reduction to improve the quality of photos that you take in low light.
Better Gaming Performance
Gamers will likely be very happy with what this chip can do, even in the mid-range. MediaTek’s HyperEngine takes advantage of the faster CPU (and the same GPU) to provide 10% faster gaming performance on phones using this chip. While the Dimensity 6100+ had similar tech, it was HyperEngine Lite.
Support For High-End Displays
Even mid-range smartphones have extremely impressive displays these days, and MediaTek seems to have taken note of that. The Dimensity 6300 will be able to support 1080p displays with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. It also supports 10-bit HDR AMOLED displays, so you know the viewing experience will be great.
Improved Power Efficiency
The fact that this chip was built on a 6nm process means that you get better battery life from competing chips built on larger processes. However, the 5G modem supports MediaTek 5G UltraSave 3.0+ tech, which means that you get even more battery life saved when you’re taking advantage of a 5G network.
Storage Support
Now, the only aspect where I feel like MediaTek had the opportunity to improve over last year’s chip was the storage support. Just like last year, this chip also only supports up to UFS 2.2 storage. UFS 4.0 is the top dog right now and is pretty much limited to flagship chips, but UFS 3.1 support might have made this a little more compelling. Though, I guess that’s what the MediaTek Dimensity 7000 series is for.
