With Version 2, eOS Brings A Lot Of Major Improvements To The Budding Operating System
I completely get it. You want to be able to use your phone without feeling like Big Brother is peeking his big eye over your shoulder to see what you’re doing. Some folks think there’s nothing to worry about if you’re not doing anything illegal, but you don’t have to be doing anything shady before you feel entitled to your own privacy. Fortunately, /e/OS is a custom Android operating system that might be able to bring exactly what you want, and with the new V2, it gets even better.
eOS V2.0 Remains DeGoogled But Brings Advanced Privacy
/e/OS is Android but it takes away one of the major things that we know makes Android what it is, and that’s Google services. That’s not special, you think, after all, there are no Google services on Huawei smartphones. It’s not the same thing though. Murena’s /e/OS focuses on privacy through and through, and they’ve said that Google servers collect several megabytes of your personal data on a daily basis. So, they’ve gotten rid of them to send exactly zero bytes of data to Google.
With /e/OS V2.0, all of this remains the same, but even more privacy settings are brought to the forefront, especially with the improved Advanced Privacy feature. From here, you can see real-time data on which installed apps attempted to leak your data within the last 24 hours or 30 days, but were thwarted. The user interface in this section of the app has also been greatly improved.
The eOS App Lounge Provides Access To The Largest Selection Of Apps
As an /e/OS V2.0 user, you get a pretty unique advantage over others. Your device has access to the most apps ever for any device running on AOSP. This is achieved through the /e/OS App Lounge, which populates itself with apps from the Google Play Store, F-Droid, and even adds progressive web apps to the mix.
/e/OS will let you install any of these apps, but you can feel safer knowing that the operating system will do what it can to block them from potentially leaking your data to the outside world (remember, you can see these thwarted attempts from the Advanced Privacy section).
Now Includes QR Code Recognition
Using the camera application on your device running /e/OS, such as the Murena One, you’ll be able to scan QR codes straight from the camera app, which will make authentication, payment, and opening webpages much quicker than they were before.
Other Improvements in V2.0
That’s not all the /e/OS is bringing, so be not dismayed. Here are some of the other perks you can expect:
- /e/OS is now running Bliss Launcher 3 which notably brings the ability to set live wallpapers, as well as coming with new wallpapers and icons.
- There is now support for Android Auto, which is big!
- The calendar app now lets you see past events from the last year, as opposed to the last three months.
- A long-press on the power button will turn on the flashlight by default.
- You can use the Notes app without opening an account.
