The OnePlus 10 Pro is official but it will be a while before you can buy it

After months of leaked details and images (both official and unofficial), the OnePlus 10 Pro has finally been unveiled during an event held in China. The good news is that the OnePlus 10 Pro promises to be the most powerful OnePlus handset yet with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and LPDDR5 memory, with new camera features such as a 150° ultra-wide-lens and second-generation Hasselblad Camera for Mobile which can capture more than a billion colors and allow shooting images in 12-bit RAW format.

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, the OnePlus 10 Pro sports 8/12GB of LPDDR5 memory and 128/256GB of built-in storage. As has been common with previous models, there is no support for MicroSD cards on the OnePlus 10 Pro. Outside of China, the OnePlus 10 Pro will run OxygenOS 12 which is based on Android 12.

The 6.7-inch Fluid AMOLED display uses 2nd-generation LTPO calibration technology and boasts a QHD+ resolution (3216 x 1440), an adjustable refresh rate of 1-120Hz, and Dual Color Calibration that delivers more accurate and natural colors at high and low brightness.

Where the OnePlus 9 Pro features a quartet of rear cameras the OnePlus 10 Pro complement has been whittled down to a trip of sensors consisting of the 48MP (Sony IMX789) main camera that has OIS and an f/1.8 aperture. The secondary ultra-wide-lens camera has 50MP and more importantly, can take images with a 150° field-of-view which is up to four times wider than on other smartphones, there is also the option to take photos using the new Fisheye Mode.

Both of the new functions are available via a dedicated tab in the Camera app, with the phone shooting pictures in the standard 110° FoV by default. Finally, the 8MP telephoto lens is capable of 3.3x optical zoom and has OIS. There’s a 32MP selfie camera with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) that is located in the punch-hole cutout on the display.

What’s the big deal about the second-generation Hasselblad Camera for Mobile feature?

Well, it supports OnePlus Billion Color Solution that allows Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad to be applied to more than a billion colors. All three of the rear cameras are able to shoot in 10-bit color which allows for a 25% increase in DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and the processing of 64 times more color than smartphones shooting in 8-bit color.

Taking things a step further is the Hasselblad Pro Mode that supports taking images in 12-bit RAW format on each of the three rear cameras, with a new RAW+ mode that lets users shoot in 12-bit RAW whilst retaining all of the computational photographic elements afforded by the OnePlus camera app. This means you can expect increased information, greater dynamic range, and increased noise reduction when using the Hasselblad Pro Mode.

Movie Mode is another new feature, allowing for the adjustment of ISO, shutter speed, and white balance before and during video capture. You can also capture video in a LOG format without a pre-set picture profile.

The OnePlus 10 Pro gets a bump in battery capacity to 5,000mAh along with an increase in wired charging speed thanks to the 80W SuperVOOC Flash Charge function which has replaced the old Warp Charge moniker and is another sign of the increased collaboration between OnePlus and OPPO. Wireless charging stays at the same 50W output but is also rebranded to AirVOOC Wireless Flash Charge. You can expect a full battery in just 32 minutes with wired charging and in less than 60 minutes when charging wirelessly.

In case you were wondering, OnePlus will include an 80W charging brick and USB-C cable in the box, unlike Samsung, Google, and Apple.

The OnePlus 10 Pro will be available in Volcanic Black and Emerald Forest colorways when it goes on sale on January 13 in China. While OnePlus has confirmed that the 10 Pro will go on sale globally during 2022, no dates have been announced as yet. There has also been no mention of the regular OnePlus 10 which is rumored to be powered by MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9000 chipset. What are your thoughts on the new OnePlus 10 Pro?

He’s been an Android fan ever since owning an HTC Hero, with the Dell Streak being his first phablet. He currently carries a Realme GT Neo 2 in his pockets, a Lenovo Yoga Tab 11 in his backpack, and thinks nothing of lugging a 17-inch laptop around the world. When not immersed in the world of Android and gadgets, he’s an avid sports fan, and like all South Africans, he loves a good Braai (BBQ).
