The OSOM OV1 could offer the ‘essential’ smartphone experience when it launches in Q4 2022, no word on possible Kenobi Edition

Those of us that were disappointed when Essential shut its doors and thus consigned hopes of a second-generation smartphone to history will perk up when they hear that a number of the team that worked on the original Essential Phone are planning on launching a new smartphone under the OSOM brand called the OV1.

The OSOM OV1 will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 series chipset which means that we can expect flagship or near flagship-level performance from the device. OSOM is unclear whether it could be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, the 888, or even perhaps the re-heated 870 processor being used.

One of the more interesting features of the OV1 is the use of a specially designed USB-C cable which OSOM is calling a “Secure Data Cable” which will help keep your phone secure when plugged into publicly accessible USB ports such as in an airport or coffee shop.

In terms of cameras, OSOM says that the OV1 will feature a 48MP main sensor and a 12MP secondary lens, with a 16MP selfie camera on the front of the device. The camera section feels a little light in terms of the number of megapixels but perhaps the OSOM team has some software tricks up their sleeve.

The OV1 is said to be constructed Ughwith a zirconia rear panel in polished white, black, and a couple of surprise colorways according to OSOM. With LG having been gone from the mobile segment for almost a year already, it’s good to see a newcomer on the horizon and hopefully, the OSOM team can do what Essential couldn’t pull off – which is to be an essential part of the Android world.

While there’s no doubt that no one has actually enquired upon this, there’s no confirmation that there will be an OV1-Kenobi edition.
