When it comes to the foldable smartphone segment, the book-style devices tend to get the most attention. However, for those who want something a little more stylish and don’t care as much about getting the best specs and the biggest screens, clamshell devices come to the rescue.
Samsung’s lineup of Galaxy Z Flip clamshell foldables are easily the foremost in that space, and this year, we’re expecting to see the seventh-gen; the Galaxy Z Flip 7 should arrive in the summer. Rather surprisingly, it looks like the South Korean electronics giant is ready to redesign that foldable and make it look a lot more modern.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Will Be Getting a Bigger Cover Display
Samsung isn’t one of those companies that gives its devices a facelift every year or two. Once it finds a look that it likes, it tends to stick with it for a painfully long time, until all consumers are begging for it to switch things up, if even just a little. Last year, the Z Fold 6 saw a minimal design change, and this year, so did the Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, it initially seemed like such wouldn’t be the case for the clamshell foldable this year.
However, it seems like those who want Samsung to do something fresh with the Z Flip 7 are going to be validated this year. The manufacturer is set to introduce a major redesign for the Galaxy Z Flip 7, and the best part is that it is a design change that will actually improve things beyond just aesthetics.
Samsung will leave the folder-style cover display that it used for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and 6, and move to a more modern edge-to-edge cover display. That’s similar to what we saw Motorola, the second-most popular name in clamshells, do with its recent Razr devices. That means that the device will fit a larger, squarish 4-inch cover display. The cameras will be embedded in the screen instead of having a cutout. It’s a cleaner look.
Samsung’s Choice of Chip Is Still Undecided
Samsung is one of the few smartphone OEMs that produces its own custom chips. Unfortunately, the reputation of its Exynos SoCs isn’t the best, especially after the unpopular Snapdragon/Exynos split several of its past flagships have gone through.
However, it seems that the latest Exynos chip, the Exynos 2500, is rather capable. In fact, Samsung seemingly had plans to make it the exclusive option for the Galaxy S25 series, but yield issues frustrated that eventuality. Yield issues still seem to be ongoing, though it seems that the South Korean OEM really wishes to use its Exynos chip in the Galaxy Z Flip 7.
However, if yield problems persist, Samsung will likely just have to stick with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which will be disappointing for them, but will likely make consumers pretty happy. Expect 12GB of RAM and a 256GB and 512GB storage option to pair with that.
