Samsung Is Only Showing Galaxy AI Love To These 2023 Devices
It seems that if you’re not using a high-end Samsung Galaxy device released in 2023, you’re not going to be joining the Galaxy AI club anytime soon. It’s been confirmed by TechRadar in a discussion with Samsung’s Head of Customer Experience, Patrick Chomet, that the only Galaxy devices that will be getting Galaxy AI for now are:
- Tab S9
- Tab S9+
- Tab S9 Ultra
- S23
- S23+
- S23 Ultra
- Z Flip 5
- Z Fold 5
The reason for this seems to be that there’s little faith in whether the hardware of older smartphones will be able to provide a Galaxy AI experience that meets Samsung’s standards.
If you’re like me, and using any of the S22 devices, it remains very unsure whether these Galaxy AI features will ever find their way to our devices. It might not be a completely lost cause, as older phones will certainly be getting One UI 6.1, but it may be a stripped-down version devoid of those fancier AI features.
What Are Some Of The Features Galaxy AI Boasts Of?
There’s a whole lot of fun to be had with Galaxy AI, and I’m glad that the features turned out to be a lot more useful than I thought they’d be.
A lot of the Galaxy AI features focus on language translation. For instance, there’s Live Translate — arguably the coolest one — which automatically translates someone speaking a foreign language on the other side of the phone to the language you choose. It will translate your language to theirs too, all in real time. There’s also Interpreter, which provides a split-screen text translation of a verbal conversation.
There’s also AI photo editing that lets you remove shadows and reflections, adjust framing, and even move subjects to another spot in the photo while using the magic of generative AI to fill in the blanks. Circle to Search is another notable addition that lets you Google something simply by tapping, scribbling, or circling it on your screen. These all make me more frustrated that the S22 phones won’t get this love.
Will Older Devices Be Getting One UI 6.1 At Least?
Well, even if our phones don’t have the hardware to run Galaxy AI, they’re still not going to be neglected when it comes to major OS updates. Samsung promised four years of major OS updates for the S21, S22, and S23 series, so the older phones still have something going for them as they will all get One UI 6.1.
This also applies to some A-series devices like the A33, A53, A73, A24, A34, and A54. Foldables also get some love, starting from the third generation.
The S24 might be the favorite child (Galaxy AI and 7 years of major OS updates!) but at least the older kids aren’t going to be left out entirely.
