These Galaxy AI Features Coming To Older Samsung Phones

The Galaxy AI Features For Older Samsung Smartphones Have Been Revealed

Based on information from Samsung UK spotted by Redditor FragmentedChicken, who then sent the tip over to Android insider Mishaal Rahman, these four AI features will roll over to the Galaxy S23 series and other eligible Samsung mobile devices. The features to expect are:

  • Circle to Search
  • Live Translate
  • Note Assist
  • Photo Assist

It’s completely unsure whether this list is exhaustive for this initial launch or whether it means that other Galaxy AI features like Interpreter will find their way to the eligible devices at some point in the future. But either way, it’s nice that older mobile devices will get some cutting-edge functionality.

Besides the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, other product lines that have been confirmed to be getting Galaxy AI features (likely the same four) include the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 lineup.

Why Aren’t More Devices Slated To Enjoy The Galaxy AI Experience?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, and knowing that One UI 6.1 would eventually find its way to my smartphone, I hoped that I’d get some Galaxy AI love as well. Unfortunately, there’s no indication that the company is looking to roll these features out to older devices.

Thanks to an interview with Samsung’s Head of Customer Experience, the reason given for such a limited batch of devices receiving their AI was a doubt in the hardware capabilities of older smartphones.

Generally speaking, AI requires a lot of computing power and relies heavily on the NPU. Simply put, Samsung believes that the NPU, CPU, and other hardware in older smartphones like the S22 Ultra are not sufficiently powerful enough to handle its Galaxy AI.

Is It Worth Getting An S24 Phone For Those Additional AI Features?

So, if you’re like me, and you have a Samsung smartphone (or any other smartphone, really) that can’t take advantage of these cool features, should you consider buying an S24 particularly to use this new tech?

Well, it depends. As cool as Galaxy AI is, unless your current device is begging to be replaced, it’s a good idea to weigh things carefully.

The S23 lineup is extremely similar to the S24 lineup, with the exception of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, Galaxy AI, and One UI 6.1 at the moment. However, even if those software features weren’t coming to the S23, I don’t think Galaxy AI should be a reason to buy an S24. It makes for a great boon, though.
